zcNo one was injured, Tuesday morning, when the driver of this City of Monticello work truck left the roadway, dumping a large portion of the load the truck was carrying into the ditch and driveway of SeaArk Marine.

City crews worked to re-open Trotter Street near the entrance to the City Shop.

She is the daughter of Jacob and Whitney Maggard and the granddaughter of Patty Ross, Paul and Vicki Dottley, and Steve and Lisa Maggard.

She is the little sister of Audrey Howard. Happy Birthday Bentley!!


300 Omelets

dmh auxiliarySaturday, the Drew Memorial Hospital’s Auxiliary prepared approximately 300 omelets, as a part of their anual Omelet Breakfast fundraiser project.

The Auxiliary uses the funds to purchase items for the local hospital, such as the recent purchase of blood pressure equipment and entrance room furniture.


Spring Forward, Fall Back Time Change

Well, it’s that time of year again; the time of year when we have to try to figure out which way to set the clocks.

This is the week when most parts of the country will turn their clocks BACK. So if it was2 a.m., it becomes 1 a.m.

Enjoy that extra hour of sleep.

It gets taken away from us in March..


Salvation Army Kettle Drive Seeks Bell Ringers

salvation armyThe Drew County Salvation Army is preparing for it’s Holiday Kettle Drive. The Drive will once again take place at the entrance of Wal-Mart on the weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The Salvation Army yearly Kettle drive is responsible for the largest part of the funding it receives for helping the community every year. If you or your group would like to assist by ringing the bell, contact Justin Miller at: (870) 460-5460.

The Drew County Salvation Army will also be suspending new applications for utility assistance for the remainder of the year in order to dedicate it’s time towards the kettle drive. Applications for assistance will resume again next year.


Fund Set Up at Simmons to Help 16 Year Old in Arkansas Childrens Hospital

zThere has been special accounts established for Samantha Chavis at Simmons Bank in Monticello.

Samantha is in ICU at ACH in critical care due to a brain AVM disorder.

All donations will be used to assist the family with medical expenses.

Samantha is the 16 year old daughter of Allen & Brenda Chavis and Susan Langston.

All donations will be greatly appreciated.


Billies Battle by Bobcats 24-17, In Overtime

With time running out in the final quarter, Dumas kicked a field goal to tie the game at 17-17.

The Bobcats got the ball first on the 10 yard line, but failed to score on three downs.  The field goal attempt hit the upright and bounced to the ground.

The Billies then got the ball on the 10, followed by a touchdown run by Justin Berry, and the extra point that brought the game to a close.

Scooby Doo, Where Are You?……. In Monticello?

z scoobyBart Gregory, of Pure Pressure Power Washing, recently held a FaceBook contest to select the new paint scheme for his work van’s new paint job.

The winning design was ’Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine.”

Bart, who also does residential and commercial exterior painting (224-2045), admitts that has recently been accused of breathing too many paint fumes.

“Rut ro, Shaggy.”


Trailer Catches Fire from Yard Burning

zbWednesday afternoon, around 1:30, the Monticello Fire Dept. was called to put out a mobile home fire, that had started from a nearby fire in the yard.

It appeared that only minor damage was done to the trailer, thanks to the quick response of the first responders, who arrived at the Griffith St. address.


County Judge’s Report

Last week was one of the busiest ones I have had since I took office. After our regular early morning meeting at the road department Monday, I attended the quarterly meeting of the Southeast Arkansas Regional Library Board. At noon, I attended the regular monthly meeting of the Drew Memorial Hospital finance committee, and that evening, we had our quorum court meeting. I thought it went very well, and that the court made some good decisions that will help the county in the future.

Warren Arkansas Speedway Ends Second Season With Banquet

Warren Arkansas Speedway ended it’s second season with an awards banquet for the points champions

The 2013 Stinger I Champion was Aaron Hood, from Monticello. Hood took the lead early in the season winning the first three races. He received a 5ft tall trophy and a jacket with the track logo.

L.C. “Chad” Russell also from Monticello took second place in the Stinger class, he received a 4ft trophy and a t-shirt. Russell is Hood’s grandpa, these two drivers put on a good race every week, where occasionally Russell was able to beat Hood and take first place for the night.

First year driver, 12 year old, Jamie Martin, from Monticello took second place in the Stinger class. Clayton Copeland, Monticello, was also a second place point champion, in the cruiser class. Both received a 4ft trophy and t-shirt with the track logo. Read the rest of this entry »
