PCH Scam Calling Monticello Again

January 28th, 2013 by

MLive has had multiple phone calls about the “old” Publisher’s Clearing House Scam resurfacing in Monticello, again.

Over the last two weeks, several local residents have received phone calls, where they were told to buy a certain cash card, or make a wire payment, in exchange for their “winning check” to be processed and delivered to them.

Please be aware that this is a scam, and don’t waste you time (or your money) with these calls.

Drew Central Fourth Graders Attend Arkansas Civil War 150th Anniversary Event

January 28th, 2013 by

Drew Central Fourth Graders attended the Arkansas Civil War 150th Anniversary Event on January 18th at the Arkansas Post National Memorial Museum. The area outside the museum was set with thirteen stations. Each station had people dressed from the time period of The Civil War while telling stories.

A medicine woman, Dyan Bohnert, explained to the students how maggots had been used to clean wounds. A woman in Confederate uniform, Marde Clardy, showed photographs of women in soldier’s uniforms and told stories of women who fought as men because women were not allowed to fight. Students were given the opportunity to play townball, a game similar to baseball.

Packs Of Hope for DCES Students

January 27th, 2013 by

Every day people struggle to get by in life. We often do not realize how lucky we are to have the necessities that some people sometimes have to do without. This was the inspiration for Brittany Hodges and Katie Taylor, 10th graders at Drew Central High School, to begin the organization “Packs of Hope” in August of 2011. Their dream is for no person to do without.

This organization passes out Packs of Hope to students at Drew Central Elementary School. Each pack includes basic hygiene products, school supplies, and one or two enjoyable items some students wouldn’t regularly be able to acquire. Shampoo, conditioner, a toothbrush, and toothpaste of their own could be a treasure to someone who has always had limited access to them.
