Boy Scouts from De Soto Area Council scaled mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch. In July, ten Boy Scouts with two adult advisors backpacked for more than 12 days at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. The scouts climbed Mt. Phillips (11,736 feet), Comanche Peak (11,303 feet), Black Mountain (10,889 feet), and the Tooth of Time (9,003 feet), a famous landmark on the Santa Fe Trail. Besides carrying packs of up to 70 pounds, the trip of more than 65 miles presented many challenges, including marble size hail and intensive thunder storms. In addition to backpacking, the scouts had opportunities to go horse back riding, rock climbing, spar pole climbing, tour a gold mine, and have a chuck wagon dinner.
