Preparation Tips for the Drew County Fair

The theme of the 2010 Drew County Fair is “On the Road to Recovery”. The tradition of the fair will continue in Drew County during the week of September 20. PLEASE read the rules for exhibitors in your fair tabloid. Fair tabloids have been mailed to all county residents. Only residents of Drew County may enter into the Drew County Fair.

On Monday, September 20, all home economics division exhibits will be entered between 1 and 6 p.m. Exhibitors must allot themselves enough time to complete all their entering by 6 p.m. On Tuesday, September 21, the exhibit building is closed for judging; it opens at 5 p.m. (more…)

Louise and Joan Cotham from Tupelo, Ms. came and spent the weekend with Marian Bowden. While they were here they all went to a 100 year old home coming at the Arkansas City Baptist Church. Bonnie Hayes came Thursday and they celebrated her birthday.

Evelyn and Bill came to see Benson Byrd. He stayed overnight in the hospital this past week.
Karen and David came, Monday to see Betty Pirtle.

1st Annual Crowns Against Cancer Pageant A Huge Success

The 1st Annual Crowns Against Cancer Pageant was held on June 26th, 2010.  The pageant was hosted by Kohl McCone, Miss Arkansas International 2010.  In an effort to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, I decided to hold this fundraiser.  With the help of everyone who volunteered and participated we raised $1500 for St. Jude!!! The Pony Express Rides Again

The original Pony Express goes back to the 1800′s. Then it cost $5.00 to send a first class letter, today it cost $0.44 to send a letter. They hired small men to run Pony Express for faster speed and less ware on the horses. These men had to make an oath:

“While I am the employ of A. Majors, I agree not use profane language, not to get drunk, not to gamble, not to treat animals cruelly and not to do anything else that is incompatible with the conduct of a gentleman. And I agree, if I violate any of the above conditions, to accept my discharge without any pay for my services.” Buffalo Bill Cody was the best rider. He ran 100 miles at one time. (more…)

Lincoln meets with 4-H Poultry Club President

Tuesday morning, Brenae Hall, president of the Drew County 4-H Poultry Club met and spoke with Senator Blanche Lincoln, about a new US Fish and Game regulation (CFR 21.54) that makes it illegal to propagate Muscovy Ducks.

Brenae is the daughter of Jim and Catherine Hall of Monticello and is an incoming 7th grader at Monticello Middle School.

Options, Inc the emergency crisis intervention agency in Monticello for victims of domestic and sexual violence offers group support Thursdays 3pm-4pm and empowerment counseling by appointment for victims of domestic and sexual violence.

Legal advocacy (assistance with filing of Orders of Protection), Court Advocacy (support in court), and referral to other available community resources that are available is also provided. All services are free and all matters are strictly confidential. Louise Busby went out to eat lunch, Sunday with Bo, Kelton, Betty, Bill, Rosalind, Pat, George, Lee and his family. Judy Harris came to see her this week.

Tom Rabb was in the hospital, but is home now. Janie and her husband came to see him.
