The last of the three Saline County youths accused of the attempted capital murder and aggravated robbery of a Drew County man came to an end, Wednesday morning, when he accepted a plea bargain to spend 30 years in the Arkanas Dept. of Correction (plus 10 years suspended sentence).
In March, the three suspects stole an elderly Drew County man’s truck and gun, before stabbing him and leaving him severly bleeding on a county road, A multi-agency manhunt quickly followed, which included a pack of search dogs from ADC and a helicopter from the Arkansas State Police.
Monticello Schools to Apply for $100,000 EAST Grant, Which Would Effect All MHS Students

The Monticello School Board, at Tuesday night’s meeting, granted permission for the district to apply for a $100,000 EAST grant, to incorporate some of the EAST concepts into all MHS students classes.

Construction on the new Centerpoint Energy buildings in the Monticello Industrial Park is nearing completion, and should be housing their regional work station soon.
Centerpoint plans to move all area operations for the southeast Arkansas region to the new facility, including construction, service and meter reading operation.
Centerplint’s southeast district includes 13 counties, and will likely have it’s 18 area employees based out of the Monticello facility.

The new Sadie Johnson Community Center is coming closer to being turned over to the city, with a contract completion date of late December.
The Parks Commission and City Council are currently deciding how to pay for the facility’s furnishings.
The front entrance, shown here, will have a circle drive, according to ETC Engineers.

Shelton St. on Truck Route??

Remember the old “one of these things doesn’t belong here” line from Sesame Street?
That seems to be the case, as a loaded log truck was photographed turning from East Shelton St. onto S. Main, recently.
Cherry Street is open to log trucks. Old Dermott is not. Shelton St. appears to fall into that “undecided” category.
Local “Carpet Medics” to Assist Hurricane Sandy Victims on East Coast

Carpet Medics owner, Randy Phillips, is traveling to the east coast to assist to the thousands of homeowners whose homes have been damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
Phillips says, “There are still hundreds of thousands of people whose homes are waiting to be repaired, and before that can happen they will have to be dried. The storm surge filled many homes with as much as 4 feet of sea water and although the water has receded the structures are saturated. There are hundreds of restoration contractors like us there but they can barely scratch the surface of the work needed to be done.”
