Volunteers Take Action to Clean, Restore and Renew Monticello and Drew Co.
The City of Monticello and Drew County announced today the launch of the 2016 Great American Cleanup taking place May 14, 2016. Entering its 18th year, the Great American Cleanup is the country’s largest community improvement program that kicks off in more than 20,000 communities each spring.

Services will be held May 24th, Tuesday,
7pm, at Hyatt Football Field,weather permitting.
Drew Central Graduation will take place on Tuesday, May 17 at 8 pm in the DC gymnasium.
University of Arkansas at Monticello will present degrees to the class of 2016 during commencement exercises May 6 with ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Steelman Fieldhouse.
Last month I had the opportunity to join local history buffs to proclaim March, Archaeology Month. The highlight of Archaeology Month was a weeklong volunteer dig at the Hollywood Plantation near Winchester? the site of the historic pre-civil war log cabin that is currently being restored and developed into a heritage site by UAM. I mention this project because it is such a great example of what is right about our community in 2016.

The UAM research station archeologist Dr. Jodi Barnes was recognized at the annual conference of the Arkansas Historical Association held in Little Rock. Barnes received the Walter L. Brown award for Best Article in a County or Local Journal for her manuscript “The Archaeology of Health and Healing at the Hollywood Plantation” published in the Drew County Historical Journal.
There will be a bulk trash pick-up available Friday, April 29, 2016. Call the Drew County Solid Waste Office at 460-6293 to get on the list for pick-up. Deadline to call is Wednesdsy, April 27 at NOON.

For the third time in the 107-year history of the University of Arkansas at Monticello and the first since 1959, UAM will bestow an honorary doctorate during the school’s 2016 spring commencement May 6.
Jay Jones, who has served as UAM’s vice chancellor for finance and administration since 2006 and guided the institution as interim chancellor in 2015, will receive an honorary doctorate in humane letters for “exemplary leadership and service, not only in the profession but to society in general,” according to UAM Chancellor Karla Hughes.
