In a special called meeting Wednesday evening, January 7, the Monticello City Council passed a resolution to reject the bids submitted for economic development services on November 21, 2014; to declare economic development services as professional services; to authorize the publication of requests for qualifications for economic development; and to extend the current “contract” with Monticello Economic Development Commission to February 28.
The City Council held a special called meeting 6 pm, Wednesday, January 7, for a vote to authorize special legal council to pursue mediation with Siemens, Inc., in order to dissolve the City’s contract with the company and to recover from Siemens damages and the City’s $7 million dollar financial investment in the water rehabilitation project.

Rita Mae Brown, 72, of Arkansas City, AR died Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Lake Village Rehabilitation and Care Center. Mrs. Brown was born in Dewitt, AR on September 11, 1942 to the late C.W. and Helen Shields Capps. She retired from Arkansas City Public Schools as a cafeteria worker after many years. She was involved with the Desha County 4-H for many years. She was a member of McGehee Church of Christ.
Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her son Tommy Dale Brown; sisters Pat Horton and Edna Klyder.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years Donald Brown of Arkansas City, AR; sons Donald Eugene Brown and wife Christy of Diamond Head, MS and Roland Brown of Arkansas City, AR; brother C.W. Capps of Sheridan, AR.
Five grandchildren Tommy Brown of Diamond Head, MS, Crystal Brown of Mobile, AL, Felisha Brown of Chicago, IL, William & Amber Adcock of Diamond Head, MS, Jason Whitehead of Arkansas City, AR and three great-grandchildren Alexis Adcock of Diamond Head, MS, Audrey Carter of Mobile, AL, Eva Villa of Chicago, IL
Levees on the Arkansas and Mississippi River will be closed to all non-emergency vehicles until further notice, effective Monday. This will include levees in Lincoln, Desha, and Chicot Counties.

Juanda Craig, Ethel Martin, and Sandra Erlanson retired at the end of the calendar year, and were honored with a cake, plaques, and the well wishes of many county residents.

In a special meeting of the City Council, called by 3 of its members, Monday night, the topic of the “economic development” bid (and how it was handled at last weeks meeting) was discussed in depth.
At one point alderman Cedric Leonars described the groups earlier decision as, “Eight blind people up here that don’t know what’s going on,” referring to the council handling of bid contracts presented by MEDC and Mays & Associates for the city’s economic development.
