DC’s Ward Davis Organizes Concert for Mayflower Choir, because of Ties to Former Choir Director

mayflowerDrew Central graduate and recoroding artis Ward Davis was a member of the DCHS Choir.

When he heard that former DC choir director Bennie Carol Wade Dunavan was the choir director for Mayflower Schools, and how much the devastating tornado had effected her current students, Davis organized a benefit concert at Nashville’s Douglas Corner Cafe, TONIGHT at 7:30, to help the Mayflower Choir .ward davis

Local folks can also be a part, by watching the fundraiser concert online at stageit.com.  The cost is only $10.

Davis’ band, The Beagles, will also perform.


“Double Catch ” Football Video Brings Attention to Local Family ‘s Grandson

Christian Caldwell, of Clovis, New Mexico, (grandson of Ken and Jo Caldwell of Monticello) drew a lot of well-deserved attention for his “double catch” of two footballs, at a University of North Texas football camp, Sunday. The second ball was intended for another receiver, who can’t be seen in the video.

Christian’s parents are Scott and Christina. He will be a senior this fall.


Lightning Causes House Fire

An East Jackson home, in the 1300 block, was struck by lightning Monday afternoon around 4 PM. It reportedly caused a gas stove to catch fire, along with the external damage shown by the door.

The Monticello Fire Department quickly responded, extinguished any leftover flames and make sure the residence was safe.


Monticello’s Windham Earns Miss Pink Tomato Title

imageKelsey Lynn Windham,of Monticello, was crowned 2014 Miss Pink Tomato
on Sat evening in Warren. She also won evening gown competition & Miss Congeniality.
Kelsey is the 17 year old daughter of Teresa Duckworth & Darrell Windham.
She is a 2014 graduate of Monticello High School & will be attending UAM where she plans to pursue her degree in pharmacy.


“The Saline” Discussion – Videos

Around 40 area residents took part in an informational discussion, Sunday afternoon,, after watching a video presentation by Rob Reep, of Warren, on the history of the Saline river.
“The Saline” is 204 miles long and has many stories to tell about indians, farming, fishing, bootlegging, and riverboats.

Armstrong Makes Donation to Health Foundation

imageThe Armstrong Foundation recently made a $500 donation to the Southeast Arkansas Health Foundation.

Armstrong representatives Marty Reep, Amy Swanger, Sandra Barbara and Keith Van Dee presented the check to Southeast Arkansas Health Foundation Director, Stephanie Norris and Board Member Tom Wingard. The Southeast Arkansas Health Foundation supports Drew Memorial Hospital with the help of purchasing equipment.


Splash Pad Opens at 1 pm, Today

padThe Jordan Park splash pad will open at 1:00, today.

The city pool opened last week, but due to filter and plumbing issues, the splash pad opening was postponed until today.


$1.5 Million for Football Field Turf, Fieldhouse, & Tech Building Approved by School Board

imageAt Tuesday’s special called Monticello school board meeting, board approved the next step in constructing a $760,976 turf for Hyatt field , a $516,680 technology building, and a $315,619 fieldhouse, also at Hyatt Field.

Although many residents may find the athletic improvements controversial, some of the intended benefits are discussed below.

Local Officers Participate in Torch Run for Special Olympics

Recently law enforcement officers from around the state took part in the Special Olympics “Torch Run”.

Locally, the Drew County Sheriffs Department received the torch near the Ashley County line, from ACSO deputies; then ran it to Monticello (literally), where it was handed off to the Monticello Police, who ran it through their portion of the event, where the torch was taken to the next county.

Officers also carried the torch by Advantages, in support of many of our local athletes in the event.

Also shown are local athletes, as they enter the state Special Olympics competition.


Jail Report to Quorum Court from May

It describes the breakdown of detainees being housed at the jail, their classification, and who is responsible for paying for their costs.
