Tuesday at 11:30 am, the fate of Daniel Pedraza was turned over to 12 jurors, who had heard more about child abuse and suffering, than any of them had ever imagined was possible. Saturday, Pedraza had accepted a guilty plea, which took his possible death sentence out of their hands, but admitting that the 2 year old’s step-father had “knowingly caused the death” of Aubriana Coke. left as little as 10 of prison time, ranging to as much as the rest of his life in jail as options.
MLive spoke to an anonymous juror, after the sentence was read, who mentioned these thought’s about the jury’s deliberation….
Monticello resident Robert Paul “Popcorn” Cherry departed this life on May 30th at the age of 58. He was born January 9, 1955 to the late Jessie Horace Cherry and Ruby Pauline Workman.
He leaves to cherish his memory sisters, Gertie Sawyer, Lawanda Pittman, Carol Malone, & Margaret Lawson; and one brother, Larry Cherry.
Graveside services were held and officiated by Rev. Jimmy Albrecht on Saturday, June 1st at Union Ridge Cemetery. “WE WILL ROCK YOU” is a compilation of various age groups taking classes at Monticello Dance Academy.
Students in this group are Maddie and Mary Riley Busby, Lexi and Tristen Thomas, Avery Barnes, Peyton Sinclair, BrookLynn White, Alex Pennington, Gracie Mosley, Kate Brown, Logan Fletcher, Madi Ryburn, Madeline Griffin, Skyler Ashley, Mary Beth Wigley, Jalyn Powell, Hope Sass and Alli Beth King. This number was choreographed by Mrs. Toni Harris, instructor at Monticello Dance Academy.
The finale is “U Can’t Touch This”. The students are as follows: Blaine, Reese and Karissa Morman, Maddie and Mary Riley Busby, Gale and Grace Lee, Anna and Caroline Groves, Logan Fletcher, Kate Brown Olivia Wilson, Gracie Mosley, Kayla Arrington, Alli Beth King, Krista Sparks, Anna Collins, Abby Sass, Rivers Frazer, and Mary Beth Wigley. This number was choreographed by Mrs. Allison Neill, owner of Monticello Dance Academy.

Monticello Police confirmed the Thursday arrest of Jimmy Kincade, Jr., who along with his brother, Jermaine Kincade (arrested Friday), allegedly shot a shotgun at three Turtle Creek Apt. residentS, last Thursday, seriously injuring two of the victims. The pair of brothers then fled the scene, to be found later at Pilgrim Rest Apts., when they then fled on foot.
Both were arrested in Chicot County, due to the co-operative efforts between the Chicot County Sheriff’s Dept. and Monticello Police.
Former Drew County Judge Dale Hughes passed away, Tuesday, following a prolonged illness.
A 19 year of lost his life, and a 17 was air-lifted to JRMC, following a single vehicle crash on Old HWY 13, Monday morning, around 3:45 am.
City offices will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day.

Kiwanis is selling flags to decorate the square and courthouse again this year. Flags can be purchased in honor or memory of any service members. Flags are $30 and can be purchased from any Kiwanis member or at Union Bank from Sandra Wright or Gail Hooker.
All proceeds go to fund the Monticello Kiwanis service project, which is bedroom makeovers for children in need.
Fourth graders at Drew Central Elementary worked on their engineering skills by attending DC Engineering Institute during their second semester as part of a grant written by teacher Eva Arrington funded by Toyota & Ryburn Automotive.
Trey Knight turns 6 years old, last week.
He is the son of David and Becki Knight, and the big brother of Abigail Knight.
Friday, around noon, the Monticello Fire & Rescue Dive Team was called to Lake Monticello, where a couple fishing were trying to load their boat onto its trailer.

Friday afternoon, around 3:30, the Collins-Comonto Fire Dept. responded to a building fire just off of HWY 35 East, near Cominto.
The building that was destroyed had housed the transmitters for KXSA radio, 103.1.
