Roof Blown Off of Fairgrounds Exhibit Building

October 19th, 2010 by

The Drew County Fairground’s educational exhibit building, mysteriously, had it’s roof  “blown” off, Monday afternoon between 1:30 and 3:30.

The fairgrounds was destroyed , to a large extent, back in May, 2009, by a tornado, and this building’s roof was rebuilt and re-attached, as indicated by the “shinier” tin before the roof-line.

The new roof is now laying in large sections on the north side of the building, and doesn’t provide any clues as to what happened this afternoon.

The Monticello Airport reported no wind gusts Monday afternoon stronger than 15 miles per hour.

There was no electricity or gas hooked up to the building, and an explosion of some type does not appear to be the cause for the damage.

When informed about the damage to the structure, many fair board member’s were in disbelief, after the recent history of fairground’s structures, being destroyed by weather and wind.

    Proof!!!!! Aliens exist, lol!

  2. Doug Knight says:

No strong gusts of wind, no explosions, no UFOs, I don’t know what caused the roof to come off. I think we should look at how it was attached or apparently it wasn’t attached. I thought the repairs were made with FEMA money, if so I would think there would be an inspection after the job was completed. Was the building insured? If so, who will be responsible for the deductible? If the building wasn’t insured, who will be responsible? Will the contractor be held liable?

Just wondering, “From Where I Sit”

  5. Paul Francis says:

A chilling reminder of what could have happened had this occurred during the fair. A licensed structural engineer needs to inspect all the buildings at the fairgrounds, and those falling apart on the town square too. A serious injury or loss of life should not have to occur given all the close calls this community has had recently with shoddy structures.

  6. Edith says:

the town square is a disgrace with building falling apart–a good wind will cause some to finsish cracking open & no telling who will get hurt when they fall right down on the square—some folks are leaving themselves wide open for lawsuits when those old falling a part buildings finish falling down.
