US Army Specialist Nick Deaton, of Monticello, was selected as 1 of 150 soldiers at Fort Bragg North Carolina to participate in the opening ceremonies at the Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca Cola 600 NASCAR race.
Spc Deaton was holding the giant American Flag along with his fellow soldiers, holding the bottom corner of the flag under the stars. Spc Deaton is stationed at the 82nd Airborne unit as an airborne infantry scout.
Nick is a 2012 graduate of Monticello High School and the son of Police Chief Eddy Deaton and Trish Deaton and DeWayne and DD Burchfield.
Monticello Lions Club recently completed our 2015 Vision Screening of almost 90 pre-kindergarten students at Advantages of Southeast Arkansas, Pauline Baptist Pre-School, Head of the Class and Monticello Pre-K schools.

The Kiwanis Club of Monticello is once again planning to display flags on the town square and the courthouse lawn in honor and remembrance of our service men and women.
The flag project is a major fundraiser for Kiwanis each year. It helps fund projects such as bedroom makeovers for Drew County children in need, scholarships, and Christmas presents for needy children. The project also impacts our community by showing support of our military men and women.

Katie Harris, senior at Monticello Christian Academy, was recently awarded the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship.
She also received the Leadership Scholarship from the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
Harris is an honor graduate of MCA as well as this year’s Valedictorian. In total, Harris has received $18,000 thus far in scholarships.
Members of our local Veterans of Foreign Wars presented a program to MIS 4th graders, recently, with organizational assistance from DAR.

Early Saturday morning, Drew County Sheriffs deputies were called to the scene of a car crash at the intersection of Highway 278 and the Wilmar train tracks.
An unusual sight took place on HWY 425 South, early last week, as a circus carnival was traveling, north, through town.
