I would be remiss lest I honor Arkansas Boys State this year with a column. Like its sister organization, Boys State is open to high school students who have completed their junior year in high school. It takes place in the summer before the senior year and is a week-long adventure in civic education. Boys State offers a practical, hands-on look at politics and government as students seek election at the state, county, and city levels and then engage in the governing process. Each year the Monticello Rotary Club awards a $1,000.00 scholarship to a MHS and DCHS graduating senior who plans to attend the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

This cash scholarship is paid directly to the student in $500.00 increments at the beginning of each semester.

Last month I had the opportunity to join local history buffs to proclaim March, Archaeology Month. The highlight of Archaeology Month was a weeklong volunteer dig at the Hollywood Plantation near Winchester? the site of the historic pre-civil war log cabin that is currently being restored and developed into a heritage site by UAM. I mention this project because it is such a great example of what is right about our community in 2016.
