Marquis Martin Investigation Update

Sunday marked 5 years since the disappearance of Marquis Martin. Since taking Office as Drew County Sheriff in 2023 we have worked alongside members of the Arkansas State Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies in efforts to solve this case. We have searched areas looking for evidence such as dry land and water. We have conducted countless interviews and have contacted various crime labs within the country to help assist in possible further forensic studies. The efforts of our Office is to bring closure to a grieving family and answers to the community. I know many have said I promised to solve this case however, that has never crossed my lips because I cannot in good conscience make such a promise even when I wish and pray I could. With this being said I want to ensure each of you that we are continually looking for answers and my prayer is that we bring justice to those responsible.

UAM To Host College Preview Day for High School Juniors and Seniors

UAMPreviewDay2025Spring The University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) Office of Admissions will host Weevil Welcome: College Preview Day on Monday, March 3, beginning at 9 a.m. Registration will be held in the Gibson University Center on UAM’s Monticello campus. Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the program will run until noon.

Prospective high school juniors and seniors who are interested in attending UAM’s Monticello campus, the UAM College of Technology-Crossett or the UAM College of Technology-McGehee are invited to attend the free event on the Monticello campus to learn about programs of study, financial aid, new scholarship opportunities, residence life, student organizations and more. Parents are also welcome to attend.

High school seniors who have already applied to UAM are encouraged to attend the event to meet with faculty, staff and current UAM students.

Drew County Spelling Bee Winners

Seventeen third through eighth grade students from Drew Central and Monticello schools competed in the Drew County Spelling Bee on February 4. Dr. Kay Walter of UAM served as the pronouncer, and Belinda Carpenter, Ashley Griever, Trudy Jackson, and Brandon Weekley were the judges.

After 33 intense rounds, the bee ended with Mackenzie Hawkins (DC) in 3rd place, Ralph Cuadras (MMS) in 2nd place, and Lily Copico (MMS) as Champion. Commercial Bank awarded $100 and a goody bag to the Champion, and 2nd place and the Champion both received a year’s subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica.

Lily will go on to represent Drew County in the Arkansas State Spelling Bee on March 8 in Little Rock. The state bee is hosted by the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, and is a preliminary for the Scripps’ National Spelling Bee in Washington D. C. Lily is the daughter of Ryan and Rebecca Copico.

Desha/Drew Cattlemen’s Meeting Notes

Cow The Desha/Drew County Cattlemen’s Association met at 6:30 pm at the UAM Agriculture Building on December 19,2024. President Jason Cater blessed the meal of Christmas finger foods provided by the membership. Following the supper fellowship President Cater thanked everyone for their willingness to be part of the association. The recent state board meeting was also discussed. The main item of business included officer elections. The group voted to keep all current officers in their positions. The meeting was then adjourned.
