In Arkansas, nearly 14 percent of pregnant women smoke during pregnancy. This Mother’s Day, the Arkansas Tobacco Quitline is offering pregnant women who smoke expanded services to help them quit for themselves and for their child. Pregnant women receive 10 free one-on-one phone sessions with a personal QuitCoach, which is a more intensive program than for non-pregnant callers.

The Arkansas Baptist News, a statewide publication of the State Baptist Convention, has named Amy Brunson, as Monticello, as their 2013 “Arkansas Mother of the Year’.
Brunson is a teacher at Monticello High School and a member of Second Baptist Church.
Monticello native David Leonard, along with the male members of All Sons and Daughters, recently led a worship service at the MBSF at UAM.
The group began forming in 2009, where they worship at Journey Church in Franklin, Tennessee. Leslie Jordan of the group was not able to attend, so this was a unique event, even before you consider the personal ties that David has with Monticello.
The center was filled to capacity with students, alumni, and others who enjoyed the time of worship.
Recently, an 18 year old Monticello youth was arrested twice in one evening.
As I promised last week, this is the first part of a summary of the legislation agreed upon relating to, perhaps, the key issues handled by the 89th General Assembly. I would not call these efforts “bipartisan cooperation” as much as “bipartisan compromise”. I’m sure no one is perfectly happy, but we did as much of what we deemed best as possible under trying circumstances. We also left ourselves room to “modify and adjust” as needed.
North Hyatt Secure Storage, at 1361 North Hyatt St. now has new inside Climate Controlled storage units available as well as new outside units.
Clint Taylor Hyatt celebrated his fourth birthday, Tuesday.
He is the son of Rita and David Hyatt of Lacey.
Last week was another busy one. I spent time talking with residents about concerns, completing office chores, discussing trouble spots on county roads and performing a few marriage ceremonies.
On Wednesday, I attended the regular monthly meeting of the Monticello Economic Development Commission. On Thursday, I went to the land sale of tax-delinquent properties which was held at the chamber of commerce building. At noon on Thursday, I took part in the National Day of Prayer service, which was held in the courtroom of the courthouse.
According to Sheriff Mark Gober, deputies arrested a 16 year old male, who is now in juvenile custody.
The story of a local 89 year old lady that didn’t panic, but instead calmly fought to free herself after her scooter turned over, throwing her into the edge of a pond, has gained statewide attention, as she was interviewed by KARK’s Josh Berry, about her ordeal, and how she found out about the search.
