One Monticello Life – BrookLynn White, Setting an Easter Example with Good Deeds

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

One young girl caught the attention and the heart of one local mom (and the rest of Monticello) last week when she showed an act of kindness to the mom’s son who came up empty handed during a mad rush at the Easter egg hunt. Seeing the young man with an empty basket, the young girl gladly shared her spoils. The mom was so moved, she wrote in to MonticelloLive to share the story. A story which ended up with a new day, but similar story when the same two children crossed paths again the next day, and, again, a moment of grace was exchanged when the young girl shared her eggs with her newfound friend (see the story below). At the recommendation of a few readers, this week’s One Monticello Life highlights BrookLynn White.

Letter to the Editor from Sam Wherry – Local Education Issues

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

I am aware of the fact of the interest of that is being initiated for Private, Charter Schools in the Monticello, Arkansas Service Region. I am quite alarm to this for both Monticello and Drew Central have such outstanding Physical Plants, in particular Monticello and the outstanding Faculty and Curriculum of both institutions and the quality and quantities of Graduates that have and are emerging from these institutions and the numerous Academic, Vocation Specialist and Military Service Professionals that are of record. Black History Month by Bishop Sam Wherry

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Black History Month was created to carve out a separate space for recognizing African Americans.

When author and history professor Carter G. Woodson created what would become Black History Month in February 1926, America’s black citizens were on the outside looking in, spectators to the great American drama, subjected to a repression of aspiration and identity so severe that it amounted to domestic apartheid.

Letter to the Editor – “what goes up…must come down”.

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

We have all heard the saying that “what goes up…must come down”. For some reason, there are those people who do not believe this saying (or the law of gravity) applies to bullets fired into the air from a gun during the course of celebration. Over the New Year’s Eve holiday, a stray bullet pierced the hood of my car parked three feet away from my house during someone’s trigger happy celebration. There was also another incident in the Monticello area where a stray bullet went through someone’s roof and stopped in the family’s headboard where the parents were asleep in that bed with their small child. And this isn’t the first year this has happened.

WHY IS THE TEA PARTY WRITING ARTICLES ABOUT POLITICAL CANDIDATES?, by Linda Davis, SE AR Tea Party

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

I have recently received questions about the articles I wrote about the political candidates who met with me and made presentations to the Southeast Arkansas TEA Party. I probably should have explained what we are trying to do before I began writing the articles; but, as they say, “better late than never.”

The Southeast Arkansas TEA Party’s greatest wish is to help people get to know and understand the policies of as many candidates as possible before the general election in 2012. Our group, unlike some TEA groups around the state and country, does not endorse candidates. We may, as individuals, support specific candidates; but we never presume to try to tell our members for whom they should vote. Therefore, we feel that the best way for our members and the public to familiarize themselves with the candidates is through the visits the candidates make to our meetings on the second Monday of each month and through the articles I write based on what the candidates say in the meetings and in an interview with me prior to the meetings. All of my articles are reviewed for accuracy and approved by the individual candidates prior to publication. (more…)

What Happened to Southern Hospitality

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Being born and raised right here in Arkansas, I’ve always had a lot of pride at how the rest of the country tends to think of us. I had someone from Iowa once tell me, “It’s so strange to me how you can be on line at the store around here (yes, they say ON line, not IN line) and out of no where some person you’ve never seen before will strike up a conversation with you. It must be a Southern thing…”

That conversation took place many years ago, and as I stand in line at stores today, I wonder how things have changed so rapidly. Are people really less polite today than they have ever been in the past?

Letter to the Editor

Friday, October 7th, 2011

I am reading a very interesting book right now. It is entitled “Echoes of Communism, Lessons From an American by Choice” written by Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh. Dr. Paugh lived her childhood in Communist Romania until she was 18 years old when she fell in love with and married an American and moved to Sparta, Mississippi. The book is a collection of her recollection of living in Romania, her family, moving to America and the culture shock she endured and how she became educated and raised her family. I am reading this book because it is insight into what could happen to America should we ever let ourselves be governed by the hands of Socialists.

DREW CENTRAL MILLAGE INCREASE – AGAIN

Mercy me, sakes alive, and carrot coffee! I note with interest that my friend and neighbor, Mr. Davis is still taking an anti-education stand in relation to Drew Central School’s request for a 4.3 mill increase on property taxes that go to the schools. Never mind the fact that 4.3 mills is not much, and if passed, would make Drew Central’s millage equal to that of Monticello! If we assume a property value of $25,000, which appears to be fair for the district, the additional tax would be $1.79 per month on the $5000 that would be taxable. That is less than the cost of two cups of coffee, or two cokes, and is less that 2/3rds of he cost of a hamburger!
