Monticello High School students Rex Henderson and Hunter Hickam addressed the Council Thursday night on behalf of EAST Lab. They requested permission to construct and place crappie beds at Lake Monticello. Their goal is to help increase the fish population, and bring in more visitors from outside areas.
The students stated that the construction would be simple, and performed entirely by EAST students. If the City wished, they could help by supplying concrete for the project. The only other items needed: 5 gallon buckets and Bamboo or Cedar.
Once the beds are constructed and dropped into place, their positions would then be plotted so that they could be accessed online.
“I think it’s a really good idea.” – Mayor Maxwell
The Council voted yes unanimously to allow the students to begin their project.

BJ Knowles, being in his first year with the Monticello Bass Club, took home the title of “2010 Angler of the Year”.
This award is not easy to come by, and it takes a lot of time and dedication to receive this title. BJ overcame 30+ anglers to take the title that means he had to be very consistent throughout the whole season. BJ beat out his nearest competitor by 50 points, this was not the case one tournament before, BJ was actually behind and came back to take the title. BJ won two tournaments this year and stayed within the top 10 all year.
“It wasn’t easy. If you would have told me at the beginning of the year, that I was going to be angler of the year, I wouldn’t have believed you.” Says BJ Knowles. Congratulations to BJ on a spectacular year.
