Roof Blown Off of Fairgrounds Exhibit Building

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

The Drew County Fairground’s educational exhibit building, mysteriously, had it’s roof  ”blown” off, Monday afternoon between 1:30 and 3:30.

The fairgrounds was destroyed , to a large extent, back in May, 2009, by a tornado, and this building’s roof was rebuilt and re-attached, as indicated by the “shinier” tin before the roof-line.

The new roof is now laying in large sections on the north side of the building, and doesn’t provide any clues as to what happened this afternoon.

The Monticello Airport reported no wind gusts Monday afternoon stronger than 15 miles per hour.

There was no electricity or gas hooked up to the building, and an explosion of some type does not appear to be the cause for the damage.

When informed about the damage to the structure, many fair board member’s were in disbelief, after the recent history of fairground’s structures, being destroyed by weather and wind.

Fair board Hears Report from FEMA, $556,712 in Damages, $417,534 in Funding

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

At Tuesday night’s Drew County Fair Board meeting, the board heard the results of their recent applications to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Board president John Wayne Ross presented documentation to the group showing that FEMA had accepted the total amount of loss/damage as being approximately $556,712.

FEMA is expected to fund repairs to the fairgrounds area and buildings at a rate of 75%, for a total of around $417,534.  This amount includes future funds that will be paid after or durning building construction, as well as money already received to remove the destroyed buildings and debris from the area. The total amount will cover the costs to repair/replace fencing, rebuild the electrical power supply grid, repair the roads, replace damaged miscellaneous items (tables, chair, desks, cattle panels, etc.), re-construct the damaged roof and supports on the EHC exhibit building, and rebuild the structure that housed the old auditorium and cattle exhibit barn.
