The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) will conduct an online public involvement meeting about the proposed design modifications to Scogin Drive (Hwy 83 Spur) to Highway 278, which includes a railroad overpass and roundabouts at Jordan Drive and Old Warren Road in Monticello.
The public is invited to listen, view meeting materials, and provide written comments. The website will be available for comments until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 2. Citizens will have an opportunity to ask questions and make comments during a “live” virtual presentation from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 17.

Melissa Light of Monticello, right, a nursing student at the South Arkansas Community College campus in Warren, is the first recipient of the Karen Boykin Endowed Scholarship. Boykin, who died in 2017, was a SouthArk nursing instructor for 14 years and was instrumental in the development of the college’s nursing program in Warren. The scholarship was established through the South Arkansas Community College Foundation by her husband Buddy Boykin to commemorate her lifetime of teaching achievements in the health sciences field. The scholarship is designed to provide financial support for a student who is seeking a practical-nursing certificate at the college’s Warren location.

This young man is a Bradley County native, but he and his family arepart of our (Monticello / Southeast Arkansas) baseball family and that family is huge.
Jake was involved in an ATV accident on May 31, 2021 and is currently in critical condition at Children’s Hospital.

The Boys Scouts of America DeSoto Area Council held their 98th Anniversary Recognition Banquet Saturday May 22, 2021 at Camp De Soto. During this banquet two Scouts from Monticello Troop 67 were awarded their Eagle Scout plaques- Lucas Babst and Johnny McClendon.
Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund recently hosted a Mother-Daughter Lookalike Photo Contest to fund scholarships in South Arkansas and Bowie County, TX. The contest winner was determined by the number of votes received. Votes were $1 each and all proceeds will fund scholarships for single parents who are pursuing a better life through the pursuit of post-secondary education or skilled trade certification. A total of $2,915.44 was raised through the contest.
The winning photo was titled “Green with Envy” and the Mother-Daughter duo included April Block and her daughter, Normandy, of Monticello. (more…)
May is National Foster Care Month, and The CALL in Arkansas is working to find the 2,500 homes needed to take care of children removed from their homes because of crisis, neglect or abuse.
The need for more foster families is great. There are approximately 4,710 children in foster care statewide and 1,510 foster families open to care for them. On average, 20 children across Arkansas are removed from their homes and placed in the foster care system every day. More than 8,000 children spend time in foster care each year. Arkansas needs 2,500 more foster homes to have more than enough families waiting to care for these children and youth. (more…)
More than 20 South Arkansas Community College students were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year college students, recently.
Induction into the Alpha Gamma Iota Chapter requires at least a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, and recommendation by a member of the faculty, staff, or administration.
