In spite of Mayor Allen Maxwell’s Tuesday evening statement to the City Council, when asked if adding $11,000 to the cities expected expense in purchasing the tornado sirens, “We have discussed it, and tomorrow (Wednesday) there is a possibility that we will have a contract;” it seems no progress has been made in the standoff.
The issue even made KARK Channel 4, again last night.
“Happy 50th Birthday to me!” (Sarcasm)
After 7 years of surpring local folks with slightly embarrassing photos that friends and co-workers have sent to MLive on their birthdays; it’s only fair that I do it to myself, as I turn “the big 5-0.”
This is the closest I have to a “weather channel photo,” from Hurricaine Gustav’s effects on Drew County, a few years ago.
This seems like a good time to say thanks for your support, your loyalty, and for agreeing that “what I think is newsworthy, is what you think is newsworthy.”
At the City Council’s Tuesday evening meeting, a local business owner asked the Council to pass an ordinance setting time limits for parking on the square.
The business owner requested an ordinance be passed, and signs installed, limiting parking to an unspecified number of hours, so that parking space can be more readily available for shoppers.
Recently, Monticello Police Detective Hank Hollinger received a text message from an unknown number. The message contained a picture of what appeared to be a large amount of marijuana in a vacuum sealed bag.
Just before 1 PM, the Monticello fire department responded to the report of a home fire on Winchester Road, near the intersection with Highway 278 E.

AC Simpson, Drew County Sheriff’s Deputy, and Sheriff Mark Gober want to express their appreciation to the many contributors who supported them during last week’s Polar Plunge for Special Olympics.
Wednesday morning around 11:15, 911 calls begin coming into Monticello dispatch reporting a loaded chip truck driving erratically on HWY 425 S., repeatedly crossing into the oncoming lane of traffic and for shoulder, even in curves and on hills.

At their last meetings, both the Monticello City Council and Drew Memorial Hospital board moved their meetings to be held on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6 PM.
Schedule conflicts of board members was the topic of discussion in both cases.
A Countryview Drive resident, whose German Shepherd/Corgi mix pet was attacked and killed by 3 of her neighbor’s dogs in a pond, presented her situation to the Quorum Court, Monday night.
The owner of the attacking dog’s name was not mentioned during the meeting, nor was the fact that she’s the director of the Southeast Arkandsas Humane Society.
Due to technical difficulties, the video from the Quorum Court meeting is unavailabe.
The screens below, however, provide the audio from the meeting.
Chris Barnett of the Green Hill community has announced her candidacy for District 6 Justice of the Peace on the Drew County Quorum Court.
Barnet, a lifelong Drew County resident, is a 1971 graduate of Wilmar High School and received a cosmetology degree in 1972. For the past 42 years, she has worked in hair salons and operated a hairstyling business out of her home. She currently owns Chris’ Hair Care in Monticello.
Following a extremely long, and at times confrontational, Quorum Court meeting, the JPs agreed to pursue both American Signal tornado warning sirens and Code Red digital and telephone notification systems.
Monticello native Patricia (Ferrell) Mays has announced that she will be a candidate for the Arkansas House of Representatives District 10 in the 2014 general election on the Republican ticket.
“I decided to run for House of Representatives because there is a need for legislators who will pass laws that align with the values of the citizens they represent. I believe that our representatives should be aware of the current issues, gather all the relevant facts, solicit input from all of their constituents then make the best decision that they can based on the available information,” Mays said.
Former attorney, District Judge and city council member Clifton Bond went to be with The Lord, Monday afternoon.
His obituary and funeral service times will be posted, when they become available.
After several years of attempting to get governmental assistance to help fund tornado sirens for Drew County, we’ve finally got funding to assist with the purchase of 27 tower sirens, which will be scattered around the county.
But as the years have passed by, many feel that the towers have been surpassed by digital technology, as the best way to go, to notify county residents of impending disanter, should it occur.
Around 4:30 this morning, an unknown driver of a Buick LaSabre on Cooper Street was traveling southbound, when they collided with a power pole, knocking down at least two other power poles.
