Popular Tree Falls to Progress

July 1st, 2014 by

A well-recognized tree, near the south end zone of Hyatt Field, saw Billie games for several decades.

However, due to the stains and leaves that it would leave on the new artificial turf, the old tree was taken down, Monday.

  1. Kay says:

Kind of sad to see it go. I remember it from high school in the 60’s.
Later I would sit in its shade while my kids took swimming lessons.

  2. Judi McFalls says:

What a shame that this stately old tree was sacrificed just to keep the artificial turf clean. Progress? I think not!

  3. Robert McDaniel says:

What kind a tree was it?
    OAK?

  4. Julie Grogg says:

I wonder where the turf will be decades from now and how much needed oxygen the turf will put off. Let’s not forget the animals that have used the tree.

  5. Kay Craig Malan says:

When I worked at the courthouse I used to park under that tree and eat my lunch. It was a nice, quiet, shady spot

  6. Lacole says:

That tree had great purpose that was the meeting spot for after the game. i will tell my mom when i was young to pick me up at the tree. and especially in the summer time like kay said it provided great shade
