Thirteen students at the University of Arkansas at Monticello College of Technology-Crossett (UAM-CTC) competed at the 2026 Arkansas SkillsUSA Conference from April 13 through April 16. Two UAM-CTC welding students and three UAM-CTC concurrently enrolled high school welding students from Crossett and Hamburg High Schools won medals.
UAM-CTC sent a delegation of five college welding students and nine high school concurrent welding students to compete at the Hot Springs Convention Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
In the college division for Pipe Welding, Conner Curry, from UAM-CTC, won silver, and Joseph Kyle Petrus, from UAM-CTC, won gold. In the high school division for Pipe Welding, Felipe Martinez, from Crossett High School, won silver. In the high school division for Sculpture, Hayden Seals, from Hamburg High School, won bronze, and Braydi Moffatt, from Hamburg High School and a first-year welding student, won gold.
UAM-CTC college competitors included Eli Chambers, Christopher Crisostomo, Conner Curry and Joseph Kyle Petrus.
Crossett High School competitors included Matthew Chace and Hayden Seals.
Hamburg High School competitors included Rafael Dominguez, Nathan Lemus, Felipe Martinez, Sebastian Martinez, Braydi Moffatt, Karson Mondragon and Will Patrick.
Chamber members, community leaders, and staff celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of The Pediatric Playhouse in Monticello.
Community members, local leaders, and supporters gathered this week for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the grand opening of The Pediatric Playhouse, a new pediatric therapy clinic serving children and families in Monticello and the surrounding area.
The new clinic, located at 533 West Gaines Street, provides pediatric occupational, physical, and speech therapy services for children from birth through age 21. The Pediatric Playhouse is expanding its services into Monticello with a mission of delivering high-quality, family-centered care through a collaborative and play-based therapy approach.
Prosecuting Attorney Frank Spain announced today that Johntavious Owens has been sentenced to a total of 720 months (60 years) in the Arkansas Department of Corrections following his conviction for the fatal shooting of Kevin Morgan in McGehee.
The case stems from an incident that occurred on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at approximately 12:53 a.m., when McGehee Police Department officers were dispatched to 806 North 3rd Street in response to reports of gunfire. While en route, officers were advised that an individual had been shot.
Upon arrival, officers observed multiple individuals gathered around a white Chevrolet Avalanche parked in the driveway. Inside the vehicle, officers found the victim, later identified as Kevin Morgan, suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of his head. The vehicle displayed multiple bullet holes consistent with gunfire directed into the rear of the vehicle. Morgan was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
Five students from the School of Business at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) were recently recognized for their academic achievements during the 2025-2026 academic year.
The outstanding students were selected by the UAM business faculty based on their GPA and overall academic performance. Awards were presented at the School of Business’ annual banquet, where students also received an engraved desk plate. Award recipients will have their names, majors and graduation dates displayed on a plaque in the School of Business.
Mainline Health Systems has been approved for funding through the ARORP Naloxone Hero Program and will receive support from the Arkansas Naloxone Bank to expand access to naloxone for families and community members across south Arkansas. This award represents a meaningful investment in overdose revention, public safety, and community health throughout the region.
Through this funding, Mainline Health Systems will receive $14,208.00 to obtain naloxone for dissemination in Ashley, Bradley, Chicot, Cleveland, Drew, Lincoln, Columbia, Grant, and surrounding areas, as outlined in the approved application. The program period will officially run from May 18, 2026, through May 18, 2027, supporting year-long efforts to prevent overdose-related deaths while increasing access to life-saving resources for those at risk and the individuals who care for them.
Naloxone is a proven, life-saving medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdoses when administered promptly. Expanded access to naloxone empowers families, friends, first responders, and community members to take immediate action during overdose emergencies and strengthens local response efforts across rural and undeserved communities.

Bring the family out for an evening of great food, local music performances from 7:00–9:00 p.m., and a spectacular fireworks show at dark. Enjoy a variety of food trucks, live entertainment, and community fun as Monticello celebrates Independence Day. Admission is free and all are welcome.
