Monticello’s Population Increasing – Other Area Towns, Slowly Decreasing

June 13th, 2013 by

zAccording to the information in the chart below, it seems every other city and/or town in southeast Arkansas has lost population, except for Monticello.

The information is from the Census Bureaus’s Population Estimates between the 2010 census and July 1, 2012.

001

There appears to have been a data entry for Dermott’s totals, so those have been omitted.

  1. Walter Dodson says:

Then why can’t Monticello bring in jobs? Also why can’t we host good summer activities here in Monticello like a good festival or some good youth activities?

  2. Living in a dome says:

Growth increase by 300 people? That is not growth. Growth is 3,000! That kind of growth will never occur unless there is industry brought into this town. Who here will allow that to happen, Seriously? The majority of the factories in this town have shut down. The existing jobs are little better than minimum wage. There is no zoning. Anyone can put a pig farm anywhere they please. There is very little for people to do in this town. Can this town’s population continue to grow and make a difference? It may be able to grow, but without real change people will be on welfare and living hand to mouth. The young people will not stay here once they finish school, not even to go to UAM. Why would they? There are no jobs, no culture. That is so sad!!

  3. MHS89 says:

We keep getting more and more people. But no more shops or restaurants. Roads keep getting worse. Many outsiders are shocked to learn Monticello is a college town with so few stores, activities, etc

  4. Felton Jones says:

Not to say anything about bad about Monticello but the problem is your population is counted with college students that do not live here and only spend their parents money on fast food. Take out all the college students and there is nothing left. I live in North Crossett which is not in Crossett and we have good paying jobs with GP that has nothing to do with Crossett. Tell me where you can get a job without a degree and make $100k a year. In case someone was sleeping in a cave GP just spent over a quarter of a billion dollars here in the last 12 months.

  5. Felton Jones says:

Crossett is the largest city in Ashley County, Arkansas, United States, with a population of 5,507, according to 2010 Census Bureau estimates. Combined with North Crossett and West Crossett, the population is 10,752. Crossett was incorporated in 1903.

  6. denad says:

Regarding the comment about so few stores and restaurants- If local people don’t shop and eat at locally owned businesses the businesses cannot survive. I have known many businesses that tried, but they were not patronized. I know many that are struggling right now. It is not too late! Spend your money in Monticello instead of in Pine Bluff or Little Rock.
