Mainline Proposes New, Expanded Clinic Downtown; City Council Says, “Consider Jordan Park, First”

October 16th, 2014 by

Allan Nichols, Director of Mainline Health Systems, addressed the City Council at their meeting at last week’s City Council meeting, to ask for permission to purchase property adjoining the new fIre station on North Main Street, for the purpose of building a larger clinic.

They wish to build the clinic in a more centrally located downtown area because they believe it will make their services more accessible to clients in need who have transportation challenges.

The Council suggested that there were many available properties in the downtown area, but Mr. Nichols pointed out that many of those properties have older structures that contain asbestos, and the expense involved in removing the asbestos makes them cost-prohibitive.

Nita McDaniel with MEDC offered her assistance in helping them find properties for consideration.  One property that was specifically mentioned was the land behind the workforce training center at 278 and Larkin Drive, across from Jordan Park.

Mainline Clinic would like to build a 12,000 sq. ft. facility, designed to accommodate future expansion. The new facility will employ 19-20 people, with a total budget of over $2 million annually. Approximately 70% of the $2 million will be employee costs.

The current clinic, located behind Drew Memorial Hospital, has been in operation since 2010, has 10 employees, and a total annual budget of $1 million.

The Council decided to give the request further consideration.

Mainline Clinic is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation with clinics in Monticello, Portland, Wilmot, Eudora, Dermott, Arkansas City and Star City. Their purpose is to provide health care to all residents, regardless of ability to pay, using a sliding fee scale based on Federal guidelines. They receive a federal grant to offset delivery of services to underinsured clients .

i didn’t hear anything about them telling Mr. Nichols to consider Jordan park first.

Reply: The land behind the Workforce Training Center on Larkin St. is just across the street from Jorday Park.
