Education “Travel Club” Students Cover Ground on Grecian Odyssey

Students from the Monticello School District, the Drew Central School District, and the Dermott School District toured Greece to discover the answer to this question, “What is it like in a country where classical mythology and ancient history still have a presence in everyday life?”
While in the capital of Athens, namesake of the goddess Athena, they walked in the footsteps of ancient Greeks at the Acropolis up to the Parthenon (447 BC)- and in the footsteps of current residents while shopping in the Plaka district. Next, they set sail on a cruise through the islands of the Saronic Gulf. First stop was the island of Aegina, home to the best pistachios in Greece. Then on to Poros, whose Historic Clock is visible from all over town. Finally, swimming and snorkeling at Hydra. Hydra is full of red-tiled houses and narrow stone-paved alleys with Gelato shops. Then to Argolida to explore The Temple of Poseidon and tour Cape Sounion. Next, off to Mycenae (1600 BC) to walk through the Lion Gate, the only known monumental sculpture of Bronze Age Greece. While traveling to Olympia, students saw the Corinth Canal, an engineering marvel. In Olympia, they walked through the crypt to the Olympic Stadium and raced each other on the track the Olympic athletes used in 8th century BC. Last at Delphi, they were guided through the Temple of Apollo (4th century BC) and the Delphi Archaeological Museum.
The Travel Club motto selected by students is “Better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times.” The club members will travel to Ireland, England, & Wales in June 2020. In September, a meeting will be held for students in any district to receive information about the June 2021 trip to Germany & Italy and the July 2021 trip to Japan.
