The Monticello Branch Library will host a “Read-In” for all pre-school children at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 10. It will be held at the site of the future new libary: Jefferson and North Main.
We will sit on the grass, read stories, distribute balloons and enjoy refreshment. We hope to have many children, parents and teachers. It the weather is inclement, we will choose another day. Mark your calendars and come to our party!
Alan Davis Jones was honored at the Arkansas Reading Association’s annual conference and luncheon on July 16th, at the Embassy Hotel in Little Rock. He was chosen as the ARA’s State Community Leader for the year 2009. He was chosen as the SEARK Reading Council’s Community Leader this year.
Alan was voted on by members of the ARA from all over the state along with other nominees from throughout the state. He was recognized for the work he has done to promote literacy with students in Drew County.
Alan worked with the Drew Central Librarian, Ms. Sheila Gardner and the SEARK Reading Council by dressing in book characters to get children excited about reading. Alan is a 2009 graduate of Drew Central High School and a sophomore at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, where he is majoring in Wildlife Management. Alan is working at Drew Central with the Americorps program and has been a member of the SEARK Reading Council for three years.
The Monticello Branch Library held its final program for the 2010 Summer Reading Program on Thursday, July 15, sponsoring the Brian and Terri Kinder show. We had an attendance of 215, including children, parents and teachers. Everyone enjoyed the Kinders’ performance. The Reading program had an over-all attendance of 989 children and 257 adults in the six weeks of programs. We are gratefult to all who attended and helped.
The Goldfish Guess prize of a Slip’n Slide was won by Sidney Fallon. The Titan Blast Rocket was won by Zoe’Frank Marshall, and Drake Green won the water Play Station. We are pleased to have served so many with this program and hope to see it grow each year.
Recently, the Monticello Fire Department gave a program for the 3 to 6 year olds in the library’s Summer Reading Program. The children were told what to do if they see a fire and were given many fire safety tips.

The Quorum Court, Monday, passed a resolution to allow Drew Memorial Hospital to go ahead with loans, made an adjustment to the number of days to make a referendum petition for or against an act of the court from 90 to 30 days, resolved to adjust the wording in Article 7 of the Library Ordinance from special to general election, and resolved to separate the Drew County Sheriff and the Drew County Tax Collector for efficiency of services to the people of Drew county. The Court also approved of Judge Lampkin’s request to pursue $150,000 for renovations of the west end of the county court house from Rural Services for community Enhancement.
The Monticello Branch Library is offering a Book Bingo program for adults (18 and older) and one for teens (aages 13 through 17).
Pick up a bingo sheet at the library and cross off a square for each book you read. When you have “bingo-ed”, turn in your sheet at the desk. Your name will go into the box for a drawing of surprise prizes to be held August 6. You may fill more than one sheet!
At Monday night’s Drew County Quorum Court meeting, the court voted to increase the proposed library tax rate, that will be decided by voters in the November election, to 1/2cent, up from the earlier 1/4 cent, in order to reduce the length of the tax (if it passes) from around 13 years to 6-7 years, and cut the amount of interest on the bonds from $2 million to $1 million.
Carey Smith, with Stephens, Inc. told the group, ” the tax will end when the bond is paid off,” and that the 1/2 cent bonds will be more likely to sell than the 1/4 cent bonds, unless there in a change in the federal interest rates. (more…)
It is not too late to be counted in the 2010 Census. If you do not have a form, come by the Monticello Branch Library and get one. We want everyone to stand up and be counted so Drew County will receive the maximum benefits due us.
This year’s form is so very simple to fill out. Be sure you get counted!
If you haven’t received your census form you, either stop by the library, at South Main and East Jackson, or call the census bureaus’s “Be Counted” line at 1-866-877-6868.
Home visits by census workers have reportedly already begun in the Monticello area, and the best way speed up the interview process would be to hand the census staff a completed census form.
Kim Patterson of the Monticello Library updated the Drew County Quorum Court on increased library usage, and introduced Bill Spivey, bond council for the library for the upcoming library tax election. There were 11,259 library visits at the Monticello library in the past 3 month.
Spivey presentation included information about the upcoming $5.5 million dollar library tax vote, including how a tax is approved, how a tax is levied, the bond process, the estimated time-frame, credit regulations, and interest rates.
The Monticello Branch Library is pleased to provide free wireless connection to the Internet for patrons with their own Laptops or PDA’s.
Patrons who utilize this service are responsible for complying with the Internet Use Policy of the Library, which is printed on a hand-out available at the desk.Users are also responsible for knowing how to connect their device to a wireless network. Due to the wide variety of devices, the Library workers cannot assist the patron with this process.
The Library warns that wireless internet connections are NOT secure. Also, the Library does not provide wireless access for printing.
Just in time for Spring Break, the Monticello Branch Library is exhibiting a display of inflatable dinosaurs and dinosaur-related books for all ages. Drop by the library anytime to see this great display.

The Friends of the Library, who are sponsoring the Art Show and Sale, are inviting all former Monticello Art League members and other local artists in Drew, Bradley, Lincoln, Desha, and Chicot counties to submit their artwork to the show.
Specifically the show will be held April 13-17 with artwork being submitted on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10. Artwork must be appropriately framed or matted and suitable for hanging or free standing. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional work may be submitted, however, size and quantity of artwork may be limited according to space available. (more…)

Jayden Nicholson was a winner at the Monticello Branch Library’s Summer Reading Program. She came closest to guessing the number of crayons in a jar and won an electric keyboard.

The Monticello Branch Library’s Summer Reading Program got off to a good start this week.
There were a total of 110 children and 35 adults who attended the two sessions.
Next week, on Tuesday, June 16, the 7 to 12 year old children will meet at 10:00 a.m. and all ages are encouraged to attend the 10:00 performance on Friday, June 19 of Brian Kinder and his wife Terri.
The Kinders are back by popular demand. Their musical show is a foot-tapping and hand-clapping entertainment worthy of Broadway.

We have many book on the prevention and controlling of Type 2 diabetes, guides on menu planning, several cookbooks for diabetics and material on diabetes in children.
Also, we subscribe to two informative periodicals: Diabetic Living and Diabetes Forecast. Please ask at the desk for assistance that may help you to adjust to living with diabetes.
Mae has been with the library for twenty-three years, serving as Assistant Manager. “Her presence will be missed by all, staff and patrons, said Nona Dumas, Branch Manager.
Mae’s contributions to the library over the years are too many to list. She will continue to work with many community activities. She is active in making Selma Junior High School a historical site, is a member of Eastern Star and of 16th Section Missionary Baptist Church, to name only a few.
We all wish her well in this next phase of her life.
During the month of April, the Monticello Branch Library will waive fines for undamaged overdue items, no matter how long they have been overdue.
The primary goals of this amnesty period are to encourage patrons to return materials and come back to the library. “Some patrons have forfeited their library privileges because of long overdue items. We want our materials and our patrons back,” said Nona Dumas, Branch Manager.
Take advantage of this opportunity to be re-instated at the library.
(Note: Library amnesty does not cover existing fines for items previously returned.)
