Desha/Drew County Cattlemen’s Association July 2025 Meeting Notes

Monday, August 18th, 2025

The Desha/Drew County Cattlemen’s Association met on July 17, 2025 at the UAM Agriculture Building. President Jason Cater blessed the fresh cooked fish supper with all the sides sponsored by Union Bank and a variety of desserts provided by the membership were enjoyed.

Following the meal Union Bank Loan Officer Kerry Hartness gave producers some information on the opportunities available at both the Monticello and Warren branches. Dr. James Mitchell, Assistant Professor of Livestock Marketing and Management, UofA System Cooperative Extension Service gave members an update on the current cattle market situation.

Beef cattle inventory for the nation is similar to that of the 1950’s. The national replacement heifer inventory for 2025 is predicted to be around 5 million which is too few to be considered a herd rebuild. However at the state level, Arkansas retained more heifers than proportional to most states. Dr. Mitchell informed producers that this uptick in numbers would not be visible for another couple years. He also let producers know that due to a lack of herd rebuild there were likely at least two more years of healthy cattle prices. Before the meeting was wrapped up Mr. Chuck Stephens with Greenway Equipment gave information about a hay demo that would take place on July 24. The meeting was then adjourned by President Cater.

Drew County 4-H Day At The Capitol

Tuesday, April 1st, 2025

Drew County 4-H members participated in 4-H Day at the Capitol, where they met legislators, learned about the legislative process, and shared how they are making a difference in their communities through 4-H. They were among the 500 4-H members from 54 of Arkansas’ 75 counties who participated in the event held every other year when the Arkansas Legislature is in session. The statewide gathering is also a chance for 4-H to showcase its impact on a large scale. The Drew County delegation included thirteen 4-H members Ethan L., Brayden S., Jack W., Bryce B., Gavin P., Jesi Henson., Maylin C., Allison M., Kinzley J., Aubrey W., L.J. H., Alivia H., Eli F., and Jacob F., along with two leaders Keri Cater and Shante’ W.

The 4-H member group attended a Tribute to Arkansas in the Capitol Rotunda where several of the state’s elected officials spoke to them, including Lt. Gov. Leslie Rutledge, State Treasurer John Thurston, Secretary of State Cole Jester, and Attorney General Tim Griffin, who called the 4-H gathering “the single largest group ever assembled in the Arkansas Capitol” that he could recall.

Another highlight was seeing inside the vault in the Office of the Treasurer and holding some of the money. For some of the 4-H members, 4-H Day at the Capitol was their first time seeing inside the Arkansas Capitol.

Civic engagement and leadership are part of Arkansas 4-H’s mission mandates; the others are Healthy Living and Science.

4-H Day at the Capitol is just one event that helps 4-H members understand how they can lead and make a difference. Whether serving as a local 4-H club president, conducting a community service project, or running for a state office, 4-H civic engagement programs empower young people to become well-informed citizens who are actively engaged in their communities. For more information about Drew County 4-H, contact Drew County Cooperative Extension Service or visit www.4h.uada.edu

Desha / Drew Cattlemen’s Association November Meeting Minutes

Thursday, December 19th, 2024

CattleThe Desha/Drew Cattlemen’s Association met at 5:00 pm on November 21, 2024 at the UAM Cattle Barn. Loren Teague from the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission gave an EID tag demonstration. He explained the tagging process and demonstrated the technological capabilities of the system. Following the demonstration members went to the UAM Agriculture Building for supper. President Jason Cater Blessed the spread of Thanksgiving dishes brought by members.

After the meal Loren Teague gave producers some background information about the EID tags and important notes. One of the main things He touched on was premise IDs. He also made it clear that the producer’s name is not associated with the premise ID. Only the property is associated with the premise ID.
