The Monticello school board accepted a CPR training unit donated by Ryburn Motor Company. The unit will help to train coaches and staff of the schools to further help to keep kids safe. The unit, which is junior life sized, tells with signals when the trainee applies the right pressure in the proper location and when the trainee breaths correctly into the unit’s mouth.
Ryburn also donate a unit to Drew Central School at their board meeting, recently, shown here with Superintendent Mike Johnston and Rita Venable.

The Monticello 12 year old boys all-star team finished first in District and second in State tournament.
They have qualified to compete in the Regionals, in Lemesa, TX, leaving on July 18th.
Anyone wishing to donate to this team can drop the money off at Ryburn Motor Company or call (870)723-6201. This will be a very expensive tournament so any and all donations will be greatly appreciated.

Maxwell Hardwood Flooring recently made a strategic decision to make a large capital investment in the company.
Over the course of the next several months, the company will be installing a new optimizing rip system along with rebuilding their yard. “We are really excited about this new proven technology as we prepare for increased market presence in the future”, remarked Tommy Maxwell, President and CEO.
The company is celebrating 20 years in business this year.
With last week being a “slow news week”, MLive had the opportunity to follow up on some of the recent business growth, expansion, and movement around Monticello.
Over the next few days, MLive will spotlight local business success stories. Although some start-ups have fallen by the wayside, Monticello still provides an environment where local merchants and service providers can succeed.
Bryant Chiropractic has moved their office back to Main St, next to the Courthouse.
Dr. Wendell Bryant established the office in 1966, and Dr. Mark Bryant joined in 1988, 24 years ago.
They opened the Main St location in the early 90’s, stayed there till 2007, and have moved back this year. The Trotter St. building was the original office built by Dr. Wendell, but it was too small, so they returned to the Main St office.
Bryant Chiropractic has added a new phone line; 367-BONE (or 2663) now that’s easy to remember.

New Merchandise has been added for wider selection!

Friday brought with it great weather, and the monthly “Singing on the Square” sponsored by local businesses.
Again this month, local musicians provided live entertainment, country style, while visitors, shoppers, family and friends looked on.
This is planned to continued the first Friday of each month, so mark you calendars for Singing on the Square,.

According to the Arkansas state board of embalmers and funeral home directors, Christian Brothers Funeral Home, of Monticello, reportedly violated state policy in the case of a July, 2011 funeral.
Larry Brown is the registered manager and a funeral director for Christian Brothers. Robbiezine Owens is also a licensed funeral director, there. Michael Jones is owner of Christian Brothes , and is an apprentice funeral director.
2011 brought with it many changes in Monticello’s business climate. In August, SeaArk Marine announced their closing as of this month (SeaArk Boats remains unaffected by this change). Last month, Drew County Speedway told of their operations ceasing, as well. Larry’a Pizza, Topps Pizza, and other businesses closed during the year.
Even while experiencing the loss of several employers, and several dozen jobs, Monticello still remains one of the “brighter” spots in southeast Arkansas, based on the number of businesses that either started, expanded, hired more workers, were purchased by new owners, or added important equipment. Each of these entities showed a commitment to their employees, and their intentions to remain a part of Monticello’s future.

2011 was definitely “the” year for Monticello’s airport, Ellis Field. Numerous improvements have been made, and well deserved honors and awards have been given to the airport over the past year.
A few of the impressive improvements the airport has seen over the past 12 months include moving the fuel pump from their old office building to the new one, and resealing of the runway pavement.
A new office building and hangar is under construction, thanks to hard work by aiport commission chairman Bennie Ryburn III in applying for grants, to be leased to EFS Geo-Technologies, the MEDC / Chamber of Commerce Industry of the Year. This will provide long-term income to the airport, to help achieve it’s goal of being self sufficient.
Ellis Field had National recognition when Bob Worthington, writer for Fly Low magazine, wrote about his experience with the airport and its staff. His story of how the staff pulled together to provide him with transportation, when he was stuck due to weather, and being there to help problem solve was but one example of the prime service Ellis Field Airport provides to each of its customers.Benji Ryburn, Airport Commissioner, accepted the Outstanding Airport Award on behalf of the airport from the FAA. Monticello’s Airport was also given the honor of being chosen as Arkansas Airport of the Year in 2011. This was the second time the airport had received the award, the first time being in 2008.
Ellis Field definitely made news, and made Monticello quite proud in 2011.
