The University of Arkansas at Monticello announced Thursday that it would be host to the state’s first dedicated Music Residence Hall. Royer Hall, a 1967 residence hall on the Monticello campus will reopen in August as a co-ed living-and-learning community exclusively for students enrolled in choral and instrumental music courses. The University of Arkansas at Monticello School of Nursing secured a $150,000 grant from the Blue & You Foundation, which will be presented at an event Friday on the UAM campus. The grant was one of 40 selected across the state out of more than 260 applicants. “Our grants this year went to programs across the state that address issues and needs that organizations have identified as important to their communities. These include physical and mental health programs for all ages, opportunities to participate in exercise and good nutrition, and building the future medical workforce that will care for all of our citizens,” said Patrick O’Sullivan, executive director of the Blue & You Foundation.

“Shifting Monuments”, an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Felicia Leach can be viewed in the Glassblock Gallery in the Taylor Library at UAM through October 10, 2019.

By layering time through transfer, tracing, and gesture until the totality of the event is recorded within a stable image, Felicia Leach’s paintings and drawings become the modality of time, perception, and production that reveal and conceal the flux within a particular place.

The University of Arkansas at Monticello has been named as one of the nation’s best online Master’s in Creative Writing degree programs on TheBestSchools.org for 2019. According to TheBestSchools.org, their team reviewed all accredited online Master’s in Creative Writing degree programs in the U.S., and UAM earned sixth place in a list topped by Harvard University. Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge visited the UAM campus Friday for a regional law enforcement training hosted by her office.

Rutledge and dozens of law enforcement officers were on site as part of the first-ever training event of its kind hosted in south Arkansas. (more…)

Area high school students competed in the regional rounds of the National History Day Contest in March at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Several competitors will advance to the statewide contest this month where they will attempt to qualify for the national event. Now in its 45^th year, the National History Day Contest provides students an opportunity to develop critical thinking and source analysis skills while gaining historical perspective. (more…)

 The UAM Chapter of Psi Chi, the international honor society for psychology, recently received the Southwest Region’s “model chapter award” for 2018. The recognition is granted to a chapter in each of the six regions of Psi Chi whose members best exemplify the organization’s purpose. Psi Chi’s stated purpose is “to encourage, stimulate and maintain excellence in scholarship, and to advance the science of the psychology. Psi Chi is one of the largest honor societies in the world, with more than 1,200 active chapters. In addition to a plaque and bragging rights, the model chapter also earns a monetary award. (more…)

The University of Arkansas at Monticello College of Technology at McGehee will host a four-week Nursing Assistant course beginning in May as part of the Career Pathways program. The training is open to individuals eligible to participate Career Pathways. Eligibility requires participants to have a child under the age of 21, to be seeking short-term career or academic training, and to be a current recipient of governmental assistance. (more…)

The internationally recognized UAM Jazz Band attended the Elmhurst National Jazz Festival this past weekend at Elmhurst College. The UAM band competed against 28 other bands from across the country. The band won 7 individual honors, the most for any UAM band, and again received the Outstanding Band Award at the competition. (more…)

The University of Arkansas at Monticello will be closed on Monday, January 21, 2019, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. All classes and offices will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, January 22, 2019.

UAM Student Programs and Activities will be honoring Dr. King’s legacy by hosting a dinner on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, from 5 pm to 7 pm. The buffet-style dinner will be held in the Gibson University Center’s Green Room. The price for dinner is $10.15 per person which will be collected at the door. All students with a university meal plan can eat free of charge. UAM’s Vice Chancellor for Student Engagements, Dr. Moses Goldmon, will be the guest speaker at the event.

UAM Professor Tom Richard was recognized as the 2018 Higher Education Educator of the Year at the awards ceremony of the Arkansas Art Educators Association Conference on November 1, 2018 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Dr. Peggy Doss, UAM’s Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs said, “Mr. Richard is so very deserving of this award that recognizes his outstanding talent and his distinguished service to the profession. Clinton D. Young, Associate Professor of History at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, has been recognized by the American Musicological Society for his scholarship.  His first book, Music Theater and Popular Nationalism in Spain, 1880-1930, received the Robert M.
