Jaxon Rawls will be celebrating his fourth birthday on July 7.

He is the son of Jeff and Jamie Rawls and the big brother of Ace Rawls. Jaxon is the grandson of David & Cindy Rawls and Jim & Julie West all of Monticello. He is the great-grandson of Katherleen Rawls and J.D. & Sandra West of Monticello, the late Curly Rawls, the late Lucy Brown and the late J.B. Smith all of Monticello and the late Betty Travis of Warren.

Recently, Michael Pomeroy of Clarksville, TN, a former Drew County resident, and Dan Coston of Fayetteville, also a native Monticellonian, worked together to create a one-of- a kind painting, which the Museum has been fortunate to receive. Pomeroy’s dad, Ed, who recently passed away, and he had a couple of old photos of the Monticello POW Chapel that was once located near the present-day fairgrounds.

John Sanderlin is retiring from the Drew County Road Department, today, with 35 years of service to Drew County.

Mr. Sanderlin began working at the road department on Aptil 1, 1977, and has worked under seven county judges – Vernon Roberts, Ordie Watts, Harold West, Dale Hughes, Garland McAnally, Rita Shepherd and current judge, Damon Lampkin.

John would like to thank Drew County, Drew County Judge Damon Lampkin, DC Road Foreman Mike McManus and all the Road Department employees. Here he is presented a plaque in appreciation of his 35 yearsof service by Drew County Judge Damon Lampkin and Road Foreman Mike McManus

Tobacco and drug use remain issues that affect the health and viability of children and families. This presentation will inform participants about the new and growing trends in drug and tobacco use, and the effects of usage. Topics will include laws that govern use of tobacco and various substances around children. New and emerging drug and tobacco trends (Special K, Bath Salts, Snus and Dissolvables). Information regarding stash gear will be included. Particularly relevant for those working with children and families impacted by substance abuse, and those dealing with adolescents and teens.

Jason Cater DVM is announcing his candidacy for Drew Central School Board, Zone 3.

Cater is a 1996 Honor Graduate of DCHS and a 2000 Honor Graduate of UAM. The recipients of the Annette Hall Memorial Scholarships were recently recognized at Oak Grove Assembly of God. The scholarships are awarded to college students annually at Oak Grove in recognition of academic and leadership qualities of Christian standards on campuses throughout Universities where each student attends. The Drew County Museum and Archives have recently been offered an opportunity to gain some much-needed income from the proceeds of a book written by Dr. James William Willis, who was inducted into the Drew Central Hall of Fame, last week.

Willis is a native of Drew County, who grew up in the White Hall Community south of Monticello and graduated from Drew Central. He was the son of Earl and Lela McKinstry Willis, local educators, who were both native Drew County residents. Willis’ father was a long-time superintendent of the Drew Central schools, and his mother was an English teacher at both Drew Central and Arkansas A & M College. Later, they moved to Little Rock to work with the state department of education before they retired in Monticello.

Stephanie Hill has announced her candidacy for Monticello City Council Alderman Ward 2, Position 2, in the upcoming 2012 Democratic Primary Election that will take place on May 22nd. The position is currently being held by Ms. Claudia Hartness.

Stephanie, a native of Southeast Arkansas, graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Arkansas at Monticello and has made Monticello her hometown for the past 22 years.

Ellis of Monticello and the Arkansas State Society has been awarded the AMT Leona Lyons Carter Award for 2011.  The award is handed out by the American Medical Technologists and will be awarded during the AMT Award Ceremony in conjunction with the 74th Annual Meeting and Educational Program on July 9-14, 2012.
