The Drew Central Middle School Junior Beta Club is excited to announce the launch of its Shoe Drive Fundraiser to raise money for the upcoming Arkansas State Beta Convention.Beginning October 27, the club will be collecting donations of gently worn, used, and new shoes. In return, the club will earn funds based on the total weight of the shoes collected, as Funds2Orgs will issue a check for the donated pairs.Anyone can participate by donating shoes at Drew Central Middle School or Drew Central Elementary School.All donated shoes will be redistributed through the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries, helping them create and grow small businesses where economic opportunities are limited. Proceeds from shoe sales help families afford necessities such as food, clothing, and housing. One entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school.Shoes can be dropped off at Drew Central Middle or Elementary Offices.

Drew Central’s Junior High Quiz Bowl team competed in a small but intense tournament with only four teams, meaning we played three games. We kicked off the day with a hard-fought match against Rison, which came down to the wire. After a few challenges, Drew Central narrowly lost by just 5 points, 210-215. In our second match, we bounced back with a strong 230-185 win over Central Christian Academy. We wrapped up the tournament with a 195-130 victory over Smackover.

With Drew Central, Rison, and CAC all tying for first place, final rankings came down to total points. CAC claimed first place, and Drew Central secured second.

Our players showed tremendous respect and represented DC exceptionally well. A special shoutout to AJ and Madison for earning All-Star medals based on their outstanding performance in answering questions throughout the tournament! If you see them, be sure to congratulate them on their achievement. We are so proud of our team and their hard work!

This week, we took 10 incredible students to the Junior Beta Convention to compete in various categories, and we couldn’t be more proud of their hard work and success!

For those who may not know, Junior Beta is a national organization that encourages leadership, character, and academic excellence among students. This is our first year with Beta at DCMS, and it’s already proving to be an amazing experience for our students.

Drew Central Elementary and Middle School collected $1,400.23 for Heifer International a SEARK Reading Council’s International project. Heifer International is an Arkansas foundation that provides animals for families in other countries. They train the families to use the animals for the benefit of their families and communities. Each animal that is purchased helps that family have food and income to help provide for their needs.

Ms. Young’s kindergarten class gave the most money for the week at Drew Central Elementary, and Mrs. Ferrell’s fourth period literacy class collected the most money at the Drew Central Middle School.

Drew Central fourth graders started the investigation by thinking about these questions “Who was Anne Frank?” and “How do we find out?” While reading excerpts from her diary and reading Ann Abramson’s book “Who Was Anne Frank?” students responded in their diaries to various prompts. Working in teams, students created a timeline of Anne’s life and a timeline of the world 1918-1960 by analyzing what was important from the text. (more…)

The Monticello Rotary Club members are leaders in the community and serve as role models for students.  Each week, members read a book to students and students interview the members using questions they wrote in advance.  In addition, students received their own copy of THE BFG by Roald Dahl to explore examples of a master writer using figurative language techniques studied this year.  Books were a gift from a member, Dr. Louis James. Drew Central Elementary, the Drew Central Preschool and the DC PTO continued the tradition of the “Cookies with Santa” event Friday, December 2, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Drew Central Multi-Purpose Building.  This family event has always been a free event for families and includes lots of games, cake walk, pictures with Santa, free hot cocoa, free books, cookie decorating, and many other fun activities. Drew Central High School congratulates Survey of Business students for earning their Microsoft Office Certifications in Word and PowerPoint. This is a great achievement for these ninth graders.

Their hard work in study and application in these software programs will certainly lead them to a good future in the workforce and/or further education.

On April 14, World Quantum Day was celebrated by fourth graders at Drew Central Elementary.  The day’s activities were supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). (more…)

On June 3, Drew Central Jr. High Cheerleaders attended the UCA Cheer Camp at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, AR. The girls worked very hard and won several ribbons and brought home a superior trophy! The girls were also awarded a spirit stick every day they were at camp, which is a huge honor! (more…)

Who takes care of the thousands of historic artifacts in the White House, cataloguing and preserving everything from presidential portraits to presidential china?  And how does that person balance the needs of a building that is both a museum and symbol of American democracy, as well as a family home?  Drew Central fourth grade students engaged in historically-based literacy lessons while learning the history of building the Present’s House or as it’s known today the White House.  (more…)

Anely Jean-Francois placed first in the Question of the Month presented by the GT Specialist, Stephanie Hollis, at the local Cooperative.  For January, students were asked to invent an indoor game to get kids moving for the recommended 60 minutes a day.  Anely came up with “Moving Chaos – An Active Board Game.”  Players must perform different tasks in order to escape certain doom!  Thank you to Ms. Stephanie Hollis for allowing our kids a chance to express their creativity through problem solving.  Anely won a $20 gift card for her hard work!  Congratulations, Anely!
