Desha/Drew County Cattlemen’s Association July 2025 Meeting Notes
August 18th, 2025 by
The Desha/Drew County Cattlemen’s Association met on July 17, 2025 at the UAM Agriculture Building. President Jason Cater blessed the fresh cooked fish supper with all the sides sponsored by Union Bank and a variety of desserts provided by the membership were enjoyed.
Following the meal Union Bank Loan Officer Kerry Hartness gave producers some information on the opportunities available at both the Monticello and Warren branches. Dr. James Mitchell, Assistant Professor of Livestock Marketing and Management, UofA System Cooperative Extension Service gave members an update on the current cattle market situation.
Beef cattle inventory for the nation is similar to that of the 1950’s. The national replacement heifer inventory for 2025 is predicted to be around 5 million which is too few to be considered a herd rebuild. However at the state level, Arkansas retained more heifers than proportional to most states. Dr. Mitchell informed producers that this uptick in numbers would not be visible for another couple years. He also let producers know that due to a lack of herd rebuild there were likely at least two more years of healthy cattle prices. Before the meeting was wrapped up Mr. Chuck Stephens with Greenway Equipment gave information about a hay demo that would take place on July 24. The meeting was then adjourned by President Cater.
