The Drew County NAACP Branch #6042 announces plans for their annual fundraising event. The 2020 Freedom Fund Gala will be held virtually on Friday, October 30 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm by Zoom and Facebook Live. Due to the conditions of the pandemic, the branch has made a transition to host its annual fundraising event free and open to the surrounding public, according to gala coordinator and branch executive board member, Peggy Orr.

The guest speaker will be Dr. Keila Foster. Dr. Foster serves as a Work-Based Learning Coordinator for the Prince George’s County School District in Upper Marlboro, MD. The daughter of Sam T. Foster of Natchez, MS, and Annie Phillips Foster of Longview, AR, she received a full tuition scholarship to Howard University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism. After college, she followed her passion for education by joining the Mississippi Teacher Corps and taught math in Sardis, MS, while earning her Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Mississippi. She also served as a math and special education teacher in Memphis, TN.

While in Memphis, Dr. Foster became co-chair of Women In NAACP (WIN) for the Memphis NAACP Chapter, Charter member of the Shelby County (TN) Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. chapter and contributing writer for the Tri-State Defender Newspaper. She is a subscribing Life Member of the NAACP, past co-chair of the Howard County Maryland Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) program. She currently serves on the WIN committee in Maryland and has appeared on the Dr. Phil Show and C-SPAN speaking on educational discipline equity.

Joining the gala line up will be Gabriel Pace of GPace Ent and young recording artist for entertainment; special honorees,  education award – Bob Ware, Vice Chancellor of the University of Arkansas-McGehee Technical College; business award – April Block, owner/operator of Breaker Drive-In; and ACT-SO community service award, Jerome Perez, Monticello Police Department.

A memorial will be presented in honor of the late James Ambrose and the late Louis Dunlap who faithfully served the Drew County/Monticello NAACP #6042 Branch.
