Government Waste in Local Woods – Letter to the Editor

February 27th, 2018 by

BBAAC0CC-B1FE-4BF8-A251-05FF7FDA37CEThe AGFC defines feral hogs as not being native to the U.S.,though they have been in our area since De Soto came through in 1541; an invasive species and a public nuisance.

They also compete with our native animals for food sources. The AGFC further states that at least 66% of the hog population must be killed each year just to stop it from growing, but according to them hunting will only reduce the population by 8%-50%.

The AGFC has now endeavored to remove the animals by large scale trapping by themselves, and yet the hogs still abound on public lands.

Maybe they are still overrunning our public lands because the AGFC will only allow you to hunt them with weapons that are “Legal” for whatever season is open at the time, which is usually archery.

Any outdoorsman knows that a firearm is far more efficient in killing than a bow and arrow. That’s why our Military uses rifles etc., instead of a longbow.

The part that does not make sense is that area hunters  cannot use guns to kill wild hogs on YOUR PUBLIC LANDS, but the AGFC is flying helicopters over many WMAs this week in the attempt to mow them down with rifles from the air, and all the while are leaving the meat to rot.

Let’s repeat that, the meet is being wasted, where it could be harvested and eight right. Do you want  let’s repeat that, the meet is being wasted, where it could be good for local families.

Just me, speaking for many others.

  1. Mark Abney says:

The Arkansas Legislature would have to grant the AG&FC exemptions in order for them to allow modern firearms usage on Public Lands outside of specified Hunting Seasons.
As to the utility of the carcasses of Feral Hogs, they are basically inedible by humans unless you inspect every ounce of the flesh for parasites and worms prior to grinding for sausage. It is possible to trap young feral hogs (under 40 Lbs.) and feed them out for several months on corn and regular hog feed. You still get an extremely gamey and fibrous textured flesh, but it is edible if you are hungry enough. It was not worth it to myself and several others in my acquaintance that have tried it over the years.

  2. Kenneth Adair says:

I agree ,, i hunt that area and would very much like some of the spoils of hunting hogs
