Alligator Caught in Monticello Pond

August 27th, 2012 by

Juanita Webb and her “pet” gator. On left; AG&F’s Mark Barbee measuring the gator that was removed from the Webb’s pond

Dr. and Mrs. Jerry Webb of the Bowser Community had a surprise visitor show up in their pond a few weeks ago. While feeding the fish one day (something he has done every day for over 30 years) Dr. Webb noticed an odd set of eyes staring at him from the opposite side of the pond.

It took a few minutes before he finally believed his own eyes and admitted that an alligator was lurking in the shadows. The gator didn’t act threatening at first, and after a few days even started coming over to eat the fish food the Webbs tossed out.

The only problem was Goldie, Mrs. Webb’s dog that she bottle fed from birth, after its mother died. Goldie has always enjoyed eating the fish food that gets close to the edge of the water, and pretty soon the alligator started acting like it would enjoy having a little Goldie snack.

After witnessing the gator lunge from the water, trying to catch the dog, Mrs. Webb decided that the reptile had to go. No problem! One call to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission was all it took. The next day Officer Mark Barbee came out to remove the gator and relocate it to a remote area. Officer Barbee quickly caught the gator, tied its legs and taped its mouth shut. When asked where the gator was going to be moved to, Barbee replied, “I’m not allowed to tell you. People in the past have found out and actually tried to go out and locate “their” alligator.”

Officer Barbee is shown measuring the alligator, and Mrs. Juanita is shown holding it, before it was relocated.
