The Monticello Fire Dept. had a busy day, Thursday, responding to 4 different calls.
The first call came in around 11 a.m., and sent them out to the Monticello High School.
The school fire alarm was sounding, and the building had been evacuated.
There was no fire, but the Fire Dept. went out as a safety precaution, and also hope to help silence the fire alarm.
The security company shut the alarm off, and everything went back to normal.
As the fire department was rolling up their hoses from the HWY 278 fire, around 3:10, another call came in, telling them of another grass fire speading into a wooded fence row, near the intersection of HWY 425 South and HWY 172, at White Hall. The Lacey-Ladelle also responded to this call, which was located behind the Clampit residence.
The blaze soon was out, and both fire departments returned to business as usual.
The Monticello crew returned to town, and refilled there pumper unit.
Until………
Somewhere between 3:30 and 4 p.m., the 4th fire call of the day, sent the Monticello Fire Dept. to the laundromat, located on HWY 425 South, behind Circle N & EZ Mart.
The fire was contained to the restroom, where it appears that an electric circuit running to a light fixture was the source of ignition.
Once again, the fire was quickly put out, the hoses rolled up, the truck refilled, for the next call.
Hopefully for another day.

At a recent City Council meeting, the color of Monticello’s new water tank came into question. A “nearby neighbor” has requested that the tank be painter gray, while it was pointed out that white paint tends to hold up better to weather conditions.
The new tank is being constructed on Old Troy Road, near Mason Hill. It’s location is near the old tank. The new one will have a 250,000 gallon capacity, and will be approximately the same height as it’s predecessor.
While researching the above “water tank” story, MonticelloLive saw what appears to be a piece of national history, in the area close to where the tanks are located.
We’re working on the story now, and hope to post it over the weekend.
Check back over the weekend for more information.
Traffic passing by this older model Chevy pick-up saw smoke coming out from under it’s hood, near the intersection of HWY 425 North & N. Hyatt Street, and called the fire dept, shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
As it turns out, the vehicle was just “really overheating”, according to someone nearby.
The Monticello Fire Dept. responded with a pumper-truck, the rescue unit, and several members.
Two young ladies seem to have escaped injury this evening around 8 p.m., when the Pontiac Solstice they were riding in struck a light pole, in front of City Drug on East Gaines Street.
Both of the girls in the vehicle declined medical attention at the scene.Â

At the recent. City Council meeting, the council accepted a settlemrnt regarding City Park Pool..
After the mediation process, the City voted to accept a “retention” of around $60,000, that had not been paid to KAJ Construction, because the City felt the work was not up to required standards.
This amount will basically equal the amount required to remove the sub-standard pool liner, and replace it with a new one.
This will begin the bidding process all over again.
The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) will hold a public meeting in Lake Village to discuss plans for improvements to Highways 65 and 82, according to AHTD officials.

This photo, taken Monday, shows the last 2 occupied trailers are hooked up and ready to be pulled out of the old “Colonial Court” trailer park, on Winchester Road.
The trailer park had been owned by the Godwin family before being sold after Mr. Godwin passed away.
According to the current owner, the park is being closed due to ongoing “maintenence issues.”
The Monticello Boys & Girls Club will hold it’s board meeting, Tuesday, at noon, at the Boys & Girls Club Building, in City Park.
Sunday night’s event, “Branson Comes to Monticello” seems to have been a great success.
Those attending were welcomed by Monticello’s own Gary Meggs & Ezekiel 3:18, who also performed “God Bless the U.S.A.”, during the military tribute portion of the evening.
Dear Rev. Womack, First Assembly of God Church, and Drew County,
Thank you.
Sunday evening was a wonderful community event. It was a well attended, positive time for our county. I enjoyed the music, laughter and fellowship.
Thank you for helping the Boys & Girls Club. Your generous financial assistance will have a direct, positive effect on the 190 or so Club members and their families.Â
We want you to know that the many contributions the First Assembly of God Church makes to this community are felt and noticed.
On behalf of the Board, staff, and members, again, thank you.
Ken Harper
In a statement released to MonticelloLive, Claudia Hartness stated:Â
I am very grateful for the privilege and high honor to serve as alderwoman for Ward 2, Position 2. I love Monticello. It is my home. I grew up here, I was educated here, and I make my living here. Monticello is indeed the major city and hub of south Arkansas. We are progressive and hard working. It is also my belief that we are on the very threshold of a very positive era in Monticello. I consider it a grave responsibility to make decisions involving city government. I earnestly try to gather as much information as possible and then weigh the information carefully before arriving at a final decision. Issues are many times complex and difficult.
Usually, One Monticello Life is done in an interview type format, but this week will be a little different.
Someone suggested that we feature Kasey Earl a couple of months ago. When I heard that he was playing at “the Coffee Bean” Friday and last night, I had to go. It was great. But that’s not all. Kasey is also the drummer for Gary Meggs & Ezekiel 3:18, who will be featured in the “Branson Comes to Monticello” event tonight. It’s been a busy week for Kasey Earl, this week’s One Monticello Life.
This weeks edition may be in a different format, but I think you will be blessed by learning more about Kasey Earl.
When I asked Kasey to tell me about himself, and how he got to where the Lord has led him today, he sumed it up this way……
The Boys & Girls Club Meeting has been changed from noon, to 6Â PM Tuesday.Â

According to Monticello Police, Wesley Daughtery, of Midway Route, was arrested Thursday, and charged with several charges including credit card fraud.
Daughtery’s bond hearing was held this afternoon and his bond was set at $120,000. He is currently in the Drew County Detention Facility.
He has been charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, no driver’s license, criminal impersonation, obstructing governmental operations, and credit card fraud.Â
The driver of this Chevy Malibu appeared to be uninjured, after a single vehicle accident, near 805 East Oakland Street.Â
The Chevy left the roadway, traveled approximately 100 foot down the ditch, before impacting the driveway embankment.
The call came in as “smoke coming out of the vehicle”, but that seems to have been steam coming out of the busted radiator.
The driver was tested for sobriety following the accident.Â
Beverly Healthcare, on Old Warren Road has been placed in a “self-imposed quarantine” due to the amount of illness in the area. This action will be in effect until February 25.
This is simply an action taken with the best interests of their residents in mind, in an effort to limit the spread of illness.Â
A Drew County woman, who was reported missing earlier this afternoon in the airport area, has been located by the Drew County Search and Rescue Team, and deputies.
The lady had been reported missing by her daughter, and was located in a nearby field, located behind a wooded, thicket area.
The lady appeared to be in good health, but was transported to Drew Memorial Hospital for precautionary reasons.
I was impressed by the efforts of approximately 18 local officers, in the cold, rainy weather, in their efforts “to protect and to serve.”
