“You Can’t Herd Cats” – City Council Discusses Changes to Dog Ordinance, Problems with Cat Population

October 18th, 2013 by

Monticello’s City Council, Thursday night, discussed suggested changes to the city dog ordinance. Some council member described the current ordinance as “adequate, if enforced.”

Others said the fines need to be increased, since the current fines were set in 1972.

Cedric Leonard disagreed with the 4 dog limit, adding “20 barking dogs would violate the noise ordinance,” which would fall under another control measure.

Police chief Eddy Deaton announced that the city has a new dog catcher, who lives in city limits. He will take after hours calls, eliminating the need for water dept. employees to come out at night and on weekends.

Counciul member Joe Meeks asked about the excessive cat population in Monticello, which led to an interesting discussion between council members.

“You can’t herd cats,” by Claudia Hartness, was the best single comment of that converstion, which should be picked up at a later council meeting.
