City Holiday Trash Schedule & Free Public Dumpster Information

December 24th, 2025 by

The City of Monticello will be closed for Christmas December 24, 25th, and 26th.

Trash for Thursday the 25th will be picked up on Monday the 22nd.

Trash for Friday 26th will be picked up on Tuesday the 23rd.

As the City has done for the last several years, large dumpsters for household/ Christmas related household trash (wrapping paper, boxes, etc) will be placed at the same two locations for FREE use by citizens of Monticello. Those locations are at City Park and the old City Warehouse located on McCloy Street, just East of the intersection of McCloy and Conley.

No furniture, wood, lumber, appliances, etc. should be placed in these dumpsters. They are for our citizens to use for excess holiday trash. Violators abusing this service with the above listed large and unauthorized items take dumpster space away from citizens needing it for holiday trash. The City will refer violators for prosecution for illegal dumping.

UAM Biology Professor Co-Authors Book on Southwestern Mammals

December 23rd, 2025 by

Dr. John Hunt, professor of biology, director of premedical studies and assistant dean of science for the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM), has co-authored a new book, “Mammals of the Southwestern United States: Biology of Native and Some Extirpated, Extinct, and Introduced Species,” a comprehensive reference on mammal species found in the region.

Published by Lynx Nature Books, the volume documents 246 mammal species that currently or historically occurred in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona. Written for both professional and general audiences, the book serves as an accessible resource for naturalists, sportsmen, students, educators and biologists.

The southwestern United States is home to some of North America’s most distinctive mammal species, including several that are rare or endangered. Each species’ account in the book includes full-color photographs, skull plates showing top, side and bottom views, color distribution maps of the species’ range in the Southwest and across North America and updated biological information.

Dr. Hunt has taught at UAM for 22 years and offers courses in mammalogy, comparative anatomy, environmental science and evolution, along with associated laboratories.

“This book would not have been possible without the financial and institutional support of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences and UAM,” Dr. Hunt said.

Desha/Drew Cattlemen’s Report- September 2025

December 23rd, 2025 by

The Desha/Drew County Cattlemen’s Association met on Thursday November, 20 at the UAM Agriculture Building at 7:00 pm. The meatloaf supper was sponsored by Preferred Livestock Products and blessed by President Jason Cater. Desserts were provided by the membership.

Mike Runner and John Armstrong with Preferred Livestock Products spoke to producers about the business’s background and ownership. The company offers a selection of cooked tub options. The products contain energy, protein, and minerals to supplement the cow herd year round. Mr. Runner gave members a presentation that went over the benefits of proper nutritional management and how Preferred Livestock Products is here to help accomplish that. Mr. Armstrong is the Representative for Desha and Drew counties as well as the surrounding area. He gave first hand experience of what using the tubs from Preferred Livestock Products did for his cattle and his operation. He found that he was able to increase his conception rates and keep his cows healthier year round. They were also able to answer questions producers had about the tubs.

Following the speakers the membership decided to change the meeting time to 6:30 pm. It was also decided to put on the annual finger food supper for the December meeting. The meeting was then adjourned by President Cater.
