The Monticello High School Mock Trial Team advanced to semi-final round of the Arkansas Mock Trial Regional Competition by defeating Hope High School. The team’s loss in the semi-finals placed them in 3rd place behind Little Rock Catholic High School and Sheridan High School and ended the team’s chance to advance to the state level of competition. The students invest many hours after school in preparation for this event.
The Drew Central safety and security task force met Monday night to receive updates on the suggestions that were made at their earlier meeting.

Former UAMonticello defensive back Eric Crocker has signed to play for the NFL’s New York Jets, announced this past Friday by the Jets’ front office.
Crocker joins the Jets after playing 18 games for the San Antonio Talons of the Arena Football League during the 2012 season. Crocker recorded 70.5 total tackles, including 60 solo tackles and an assisted tackle for a loss. He also had three interceptions, 13 pass breakups, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.

The museum itself was formerly known as the Cavaness house for those of you who never knew, or have forgotten, its beginnings. Newlyweds Garvin W. Cavaness and his wife, Pattie Phenton Wells, began construction of their home in 1906.
The Monticello Billies led all the way from the early 1st period, until the second overtime; but the Pottsville Apaches came from behind to tie the game 8 times, took the lead with seconds to go for a 56-54 win over the Billies.

The MHS Forensic team travelled to Searcy High School where they earned their fifth 1st Place Sweepstake award this year. Twenty-five entries earned awards, and 35 of these entries are now qualified to compete at the Tournament of Champions in April. Read the rest of this entry »
Jessica Wishard, a senior at Drew Central High School, received recognition at their recent school board meeting for advancing to finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program of 2013. She was awarded a certificate by Ms. Melissa Vincent, Principal of the high school.
Drew County currently does not have an active parole / probation case officer dedicated for the county’s offenders. Currently, officers designated for other counties are covering Drew County, on top of their regular responsibilities.
When questions about probation case in Circuit Court Monday, Judge Gibson said that was under the impression the each officer had a maximum case load of 25. Court testimony later reflected that total has been increased up to 60.

Mrs. Betty, as an employee of Guesthouse and Greystone Manor, touched many lives.
She was a friend of the residents in that facility, and an important part of the families of those residents.

Willie Lee Jefferson was born to the late J.B. Jefferson and the late Clara Hazel Trotter Jefferson on December 18, 1959 in the Winchester Community. He departed this life on Saturday, February 23, 2013 in Monticello, AR.

Students from Monticello Dance Academy recently competed at the regional VIP Dance Competition in Little Rock, bringing home numerous awards.
