On July 26, Dr. Arturo Quintero Ferrer, assistant professor of biology at UAM, presented during an educators’ panel at the 2024 San Diego Comic Convention (Comic-Con International) at the San Diego Convention Center. Comic-Con International is an annual multicultural event representing artists from around the world, with attendance exceeding 130,000 in recent years. (more…)
The University of Arkansas Foundation, Inc. has elected Scott Saffold of Monticello, Arkansas, as chairman of the UA Foundation. His two-year term began on July 1, 2024. The board serves the University of Arkansas System.
Saffold is the executive vice president and senior loan officer for Union Bank & Trust in Monticello, where he has been employed since 2005. (more…)
A University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) nursing student was one of ten Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students in the state accepted into the Arkansas Center for Nursing’s BSN Young Leaders Program.
Madison Hollis, a senior nursing student at UAM, focused her research on the maternal health crisis in southeast Arkansas and was chosen for the program through a highly competitive selection process that considered student researchers from baccalaureate nursing programs across Arkansas. She will present her project at the Arkansas Center for Nursing’s Leadership and Legacy ceremony on October 14, 2024, at the Benton Event Center in Benton, AR. (more…)

The University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) presented 526 awards to 478 spring 2024 graduates, according to information released by the UAM Registrar’s Office.
Callie Esther Becks of Crossett,
Arkansas, has been named the new regional director of the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center (ASBTDC) at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM). She comes to the ASBTDC from the Ashley County Abstract Company, where she served as a title researcher and managed day-to-day business operations.
Becks graduated from UAM with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration degree. (more…)
The Division of Music at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) hosted its inaugural UAM Jazz Week, recently. The event featured workshops and lessons guided by jazz experts, four guest artists, fellow musicians and UAM educators.
UAM Jazz One, joined by the guest artists and educators in the UAM Master of Music program, hosted a free concert on April 9. Guest artists included Tim Leahey, former jazz soloist for the United States Air Force Airmen of Note; Steve Holley, president of the Association for Popular Music Education; Ben Patterson, former lead trombonist and music director for the United States Air Force Airmen of Note; and Les Pack, renowned jazz composer and professor of music at UAM.
UAM Kids’ University will be held at the University of Arkansas at Monticello from July 8 through July 11, 2024. (more…)
The University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) recently received a donation of $150,000 from the Treadwell family in memory of Virginia Lee Treadwell Allen.
Allen, a Monticello native, passed away in May 2023. She was the eldest of seven children. Throughout her life, she held various jobs, including roles in bookkeeping and accounting, before retiring as an interior designer. (more…)

During a recent session of The Stock Market Game, a national investment simulation competition, a UAM business student won the top prize in the state while competing against college students from Arkansas.
The University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) will continue restoration efforts on two historic properties and begin work on a third project thanks to a $934,269 grant awarded to the university from the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council (ANCRC).
In May, the ANCRC approved the FY2025 grant funding for UAM. (more…)

This week, UAM Baseball has been putting on stellar performances in the GAC Championship. Because the team’s game on Friday would coincide with UAM commencement ceremonies and UAM Baseball’s seniors would be unable to walk at commencement, UAM took commencement to them.
On Thursday, Dr. Peggy Doss, chancellor of UAM, and Crystal Halley, vice chancellor of Academic Affairs, traveled to Little Rock to deliver the diplomas to seniors during a special on-field ceremony. Congratulations to our graduates and our incredible baseball team!
The Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) has approved the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) for funding to continue as a Special Education Resource Teacher Academy during the 2024-2025 academic year.
UAM was initially approved as a Special Education Resource Teacher Academy after receiving a grant for the 2022-2023 academic year as the result of a grant proposal submitted on behalf of the UAM School of Education by Dr. Kim Level, dean of the UAM School of Education, and Deborah Givhan, special education coordinator and instructor in the UAM School of Education. In 2023, UAM received funding to continue the program in the 2023-2024 academic year.
The University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) will hold its spring commencement exercises on Friday, May 10, in the Steelman Field House. Commencement will be split into two ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Doors will open at 9 a.m. for the 10 a.m. ceremony and 1 p.m. for the 2 p.m. ceremony. The University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) will launch the Weevil Jumpstart Program for first-time freshmen in July 2024. Eligible students who enroll in six credit hours during Summer Session II will receive a full campus housing scholarship through the program. Classes will run from July 1 through July 31. (more…)

Two University of Arkansas at Monticello students recently received honors in the annual Poets’ Roundtable of Arkansas Pat Laster Collegiate Poetry Contest. Jordan Self, a senior education major from Monticello, Arkansas, won first place with her poem “White Paint.” Mercedes McCool, a senior communication major from Bastrop, Louisiana, received an honorable mention for her poem “Jonesing.” (more…)
