At 11:39 PM on September 7, Monticello Firefighters were paged out to a structure fire, at the intersection of Bolling and S. Main St.

A large barn/shop behind the residence was fully engulfed. The structure was a total loss.

No injuries reported.

The other day, I posted a photo of an armadillo in Western Pines, thinking this was an unusual occurrence. Later that day, my back fence neighbor share this photo with me.

There is a water leak on N Hyatt St/Hwy 425 N. It is affecting multiple customers in the area. We are aware of the leak and are working to get it fixed. There is no estimated time frame on when it will be repaired, but it is currently being worked on.

Due to maintenance, there will be a test of the tornado warning sirens, today.

Alicia Marshall, age 40, was arrested by MPD Officers after responding to a call on North Cooper Street. Once on scene, it was discovered by officers that Marshall was in possession of methamphetamine. She was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

During an interview, yesterday, it was accidentally stated that Monday, February 13 is Presidents’ Day.

Actually, presidents day is Monday, February 20, and is a national holiday.

The final line of severe winter weather and freezing rain produced ice of up to half an inch within areas in the southern region of the state, resulting in approximately 53,000 customer outages at peak today. Currently 42,000 customers are without power.

The state has been hit by multiple waves of winter storm activity since last week. Entergy Arkansas has safely restored approximately 53,000 customer outages since Monday. (more…)

The University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) has announced the appointment of Jay Hughes as vice chancellor for Student Engagement.

Hughes has 40 years of combined experience in both public and higher education. He graduated from UAM in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts in history degree. His career in education began in Crossett at Norman Junior High School as a history teacher. He held positions as a history teacher at Monticello High School and Crossett High School before pursuing a master’s degree in general counseling at Louisiana Tech. Hughes received his M.A. in 1992 before taking a teaching position at Blytheville High School. Two years later, he returned to Monticello as assistant principal of Monticello Junior High School, a post he held until 2000 when he became principal of Monticello Middle School.

Last year, the Monticello school board approved the contract with Darrell Odom Architecture for the construction of the Arena.
