Late in the afternoon, on the last Thursday in June, the Monticello Fire Department responded to Cherry Street for a report of a car fire.
Upon their arrival they found this new Chevrolet Corvette burning, with the driver standing nearby.
The driver reported traveling down the street, being flag down by a neighbor, and told that his car was on fire.
The car was a total loss.
At 1:30, Sunday afternoon, the Monticello Fire Department was responding to a fire on Highway 425 South. (more…)
This photo, taken Monday morning around 10:45, shows the Monticello Fire Department extinguishing a grass fire, reaching into a wooded area on Highway 83 N.
Later Monday there was a grass fire near Dollar Hill, on the east side of the county. Next, there were two grass fires reported on Old Highway 13.
Tuesday, a fire was reported just off of Highway 35 E., in Collins. This morning, a grass fire was extinguished near the 278 bypass, on 425 South.
As you’re traveling around the county, please keep an eye out for fires or anything that needs to be reported to authorities to prevent damage to property and possibly risk of life.

At 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, Kevin Griffin, team leader of the Drew Central Maintenance Department, notified me that Eric Chisom, Monticello Fire Chief, and other members of the Monticello Fire Department were responding to fire alarms in the Drew Central Multi-Purpose Gymnasium. (more…)
Around 4:30, Sunday afternoon, a home fire occurred on Selma-Collins Road. Collins-Cominto, Selma, Winchester and Tillar fire departments responded, along with Drew County OEM. No one was home at the time of the fire.
At noon, Sunday afternoon this SUV caught fire, just west of Wilmar, while traveling east. Wilmar fire department and OEM responded.
Around 1 AM, Sunday morning, a chimney fire occurred and the sale the community. Damage was limited, due to the quick response of Selma, Winchester and Tillar fire department. Drew County OEM also responded.
Not to imply that any of these fires are related to cold weather conditions, but please be aware that more fires occur during times of inclement weather, due to extra heat being needed inside of homes. Please be careful.
Tuesday, at 5:35 PM, Monticello dispatch sent Drew County Deputies and Monticello Fire Dept. to Ras Pace Road, for the report of an explosion at a residence. (more…)
Two single-engine planes collided in midair Thursday afternoon during firefighting activities in southeastern Nevada.
That crash took the life of Blake Haynes, a 62-year-old pilot, born and raised in Monticello, who had flown all types of aircraft for over 40 years, ranging from crop-dusters to Lear Jets.
His parents, Bill and Mary Jo Haynes, still reside in Monticello.

At last month’s City Council meeting, the most discussed topic was the proposed burning ordinance, specifically of leaves and debris.
Issues discussed included how permits must be
obtained from the fire department before any burning can take place.
The photo was taken Thursday morning, as a man was apparently burning down what was left of a former residence.
Around 315, Tuesday, Monticello firefighters were paged to a woods fire, near the intersection of Midway Route and Wilson Mill Road.
No report was available at the time of the fire about how it started.
Firefighters were sent to area homes on Wilson Mill Road, to protect them, during the early stages of the blaze, as the fire line was moving to the south.
It is believed that aside from timberland, no other damage was done.
