Drew Central fourth graders started the investigation by thinking about these questions “Who was Anne Frank?” and “How do we find out?” While reading excerpts from her diary and reading Ann Abramson’s book “Who Was Anne Frank?” students responded in their diaries to various prompts. Working in teams, students created a timeline of Anne’s life and a timeline of the world 1918-1960 by analyzing what was important from the text. (more…)

Minutes after 6 AM, parents of drew Central middle school students received a phone call notifying them of a social media thread made against the school. Text messages were also sent out.

The Monticello Rotary Club members are leaders in the community and serve as role models for students.  Each week, members read a book to students and students interview the members using questions they wrote in advance.  In addition, students received their own copy of THE BFG by Roald Dahl to explore examples of a master writer using figurative language techniques studied this year.  Books were a gift from a member, Dr. Louis James. Keep Arkansas Beautiful visited Monticello and Drew Central Elementary Schools last week and brought Otto the Otter to visit with kids, hand out coloring books and talk to them about keeping Monticello clean.

Mayor Akers is encouraging a city wide clean up on March 24th and 25th. On the 24th, city employees will pick up litter and trash in town and any institution wanting to help on Saturday the 25th can contact City Hall to arrange a time to obtain clean up materials furnished by Keep Arkansas Beautiful.

So far, several Churches have volunteered to help on the 25th, including Morning Star Missionary Baptist, Church of Christ, The Revival Center and Immanuel Baptist.

Drew Central third grade teacher, Emily Howard, was surprised this morning, when Arkansas Governor Sarah, Huckabee Sanders, along with Arkansas department of education representatives, presented her with the Milken educator reward, for excellence in teaching.

She is the first Drew County recipient of the honor.

Drew Central Elementary, the Drew Central Preschool and the DC PTO continued the tradition of the “Cookies with Santa” event Friday, December 2, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Drew Central Multi-Purpose Building.  This family event has always been a free event for families and includes lots of games, cake walk, pictures with Santa, free hot cocoa, free books, cookie decorating, and many other fun activities.
