In a typical year, Drew County Extension Homemakers Clubs will award either a local graduating senior entering UAM or student currently studying there an academic scholarship, but 2020 has not been a typical year. In late spring when the EHC Scholarship Committee called for applications, local students had already been sent home to learn remotely. They struggled to compile the necessary documents and signatures which EHC requires for the scholarship application, and EHC extended their deadline to encourage students to complete the applications.
In the end, EHC received the strongest group of applications the scholarship committee has ever seen. The number of bright and promising young people in our community presented an exciting challenge. Choosing just one from among them to receive the scholarship seemed an impossible task. The committee could see that the viral pandemic has resulted in ever-growing monetary need among the families of young people seeking an education. (more…)

Students did gymnastic routines in front of the windows so that residents could see and enjoy!
Eva Arrington will be leading an Education First Tours parent and student meeting for students interested from any school district and home school students. Citizens Bank has completed construction and has opened its new state-of-the-art financial center located at 236 U.S. Highway 425 North in Monticello. Consolidating its previous branches in Monticello allows the bank’s staff to more efficiently address the financial needs of consumers, professionals and commercial entities in the region.
A grand opening celebration for the facility will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, and will include remarks from bank and local officials, a ribbon-cutting, a reception and informal tours. (more…)
SHOW TIME CHANGE:
Kim’s Dance Factory will present its Fall Theatre Production “Just a Lil’ Hocus Pocus” at the City Park Amphitheatre on Saturday, October 24. Show times will be 4:00, 6:00 , and 7:30. Admission is FREE! Along with the performances directed by Maggie Barnett there will be a COVID friendly trunk or treat for the community!
We encourage kids to wear their costumes and come out to the park and enjoy a fun and safe activity and some fantastic entertainment!



Local Health Units across Arkansas will stay open later on Tuesdays so that services including flu vaccinations and COVID-19 tests are available after normal business hours.
The health units, which are located in every county in the state, will now be open between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesdays.
“Local Health Units play a critical role in improving the health and well-being of Arkansans,” said Cassie Cochran, the director of ADH’s Center for Local Public Health. “We hope this change makes the units more accessible and allows more Arkansans to take advantage of the available services.” (more…)
SeaArk will be collecting donations for hurricane victims in South Louisiana this week. We will be at Walmart in Monticello 8am -5pm Wednesday 9/30. Walmart in Crossett 8am-noon 10/01 and Walmart in El Dorado 1pm-5pm. Non perishible food items are a great need.

The Southeast regional office of Duck Unlimited has hired a UAM Wildlife graduate student as its new State Waterfowl Biologist. Jakeb Spears started his new job in Jonesboro, Arkansas, on September 21st. He will assist private landowners and state partners in improving waterfowl habitat on their properties. He will help them enroll eligible lands in federal conversation programs such as the Wetland Reserve Easement Program.
