The University of Arkansas at Monticello presented a posthumous heavy equipment operator technical certificate to the late Mark Ellis of Monticello during December commencement on Saturday. Jim Ellis (left), a 2006 UAM CIS graduate and brother of the late Mr. Ellis, accepted the certificate from UAM Chancellor Karla Hughes.

The University of Arkansas at Monticello presented a posthumous bachelor of arts degree in communications with a minor in political science to the late Ronnie Curry of Crossett during December commencement on Saturday. Nicole Currie (left), the late Mr. Curry’s daughter, accepted the degree from UAM Chancellor Karla Hughes.

Members of Mainline Health Systems, Incorporated joined UAM officials at the official presentation of a $51,000 gift to the UAM Foundation Fund.

Ethan Massey of Baton Rouge, La., a graduate student in the School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, is the first recipient of the Dr. Robert H. Burch, Jr., Waterfowl Research endowment. The award was presented last week at the annual Drew County Ducks Unlimited banquet held at the Monticello Country Club.

The endowment honors the late Dr. Robert H. Burch, Jr., long-time Monticello dentist and avid duck hunter. Pictured from left are Dr. Chris Sims, professor of biology at UAM, Katelyn Burch Busby, Leeann Burch, Ethan Massey and Dr. Doug Osborne, assistant professor of wildlife.

Family, friends and colleagues of the late Dr. Robert H. Burch, Jr. have begun a campaign to create a waterfowl research endowment in the University of Arkansas at Monticello Foundation Fund.

Former UAMonticello defensive back Eric Crocker has signed to play for the NFL’s New York Jets, announced this past Friday by the Jets’ front office.

Crocker joins the Jets after playing 18 games for the San Antonio Talons of the Arena Football League during the 2012 season. Crocker recorded 70.5 total tackles, including 60 solo tackles and an assisted tackle for a loss. He also had three interceptions, 13 pass breakups, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.

Non-credit courses in topics ranging from self-defense to photography will be offered this fall by the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s Department of Community Education.

“Whether you are looking to sharpen your computer skills or for ways to get in shape, we have something for just about everyone,” stated Memorie Dickson, program coordinator.

Classes for fall 2012 include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Dance Fitness plus Toning, Zumba, Shooting Portraits with Artificial Lighting, Self-Defense for Women, The Creative Camera, How to Take Better Photographs, Energy Saving Do It Yourself, Reading Like a Writer (to Become a Better Writer), Understanding State and Local Government, and Digital Image Processing Using Adobe Photoshop.

Brian Ramsey, assistant commissioner for communications of the Great American Conference, is returning to the University of Arkansas at Monticello as assistant athletic director for media relations.

Ramsey was UAM’s sports information director from 2007-11.

“We are pleased to welcome Brian Ramsey back to UAM,” said Athletics Director Chris Ratcliff. “Brian did an excellent job as sports information director and with his added administrative experience with the conference office, will bring fresh insight and new ideas to the Department of Athletics.”

The University of Arkansas at Monticello will hold two pre-registration sessions for incoming freshmen June 18 and 19, according to Mary Whiting, director of admissions.

The June 18 session begins at 12:30 p.m., in the Fine Arts Center, and the June 19 event begins at 5:30 p.m., in the Fine Arts Center. Only students who have applied for admission and have received mail notification may pre-register on those dates. Letters of invitation were sent to each student with a request for a reply.

Tyler Harrison and Parker Palsa

Two 2012 high school graduates have been selected to receive Environmental and Spatial Technology (EAST) scholarships to attend the University of Arkansas at Monticello next fall.

The recipients are Parker Palsa, a graduate of Monticello High School and the daughter of Eddie and Tommie Palsa; and Tyler Harrison, a graduate of Star City High School and the son of Brenda Harrison.

UKayla Jackson continues to add to her legacy as one of the best softball players in University of Arkansas at Monticello history.

Jackson became the first three-time softball All-American in school history Wednesday when she was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Second Team. The senior pitcher from Hallsville, Tex., was a third team All-American in 2010 and a second team selection last year.

To Reginald Glover, the University of Arkansas at Monticello – and Arkansas A&M before it – have always seemed like part of his extended family.

Glover, a retired banking executive, long-time volunteer fund-raiser and all-around booster for the university, is UAM’s 50th Distinguished Alumnus. Glover will be honored during commencement exercises this Friday at Steelman Fieldhouse.

Kayla Jackson

Kayla Jackson threw her second no-hitter of the season the first of two wins over the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs, 3-0 and 3-2.

The UAM ace got her 25th win of the season in the seven-inning affair. She was two runners away from the perfect game, as the only blemishes on the day came in the third inning on a third-strike passed ball and a walk in the fourth inning.

R. David Ray, provost, vice chancellor for academic affairs, and dean of the graduate program at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, has announced his retirement effective June 30.

Ray has been a member of the UAM faculty for 42 years since coming to Monticello from Texas Tech in 1970 and created the school’s debate and forensics program, one of the most successful and respected in the nation.

The tale of the famously haunted Allen House of Monticello is the subject of a new book by Mark Spencer, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

A Haunted Love Story, The Ghosts of the Allen House is a nonfiction intertwining of two stories: one family’s experiences residing in the house, and the story of the best known member of the Allen family, Ladell Allen Bonner (March 22, 1894 – January 2, 1949), whose hidden stash of over 80 love letters Spencer discovered under a floorboard in the attic. Denmark won CFL Catch of the Year earlier this season.

The former Weevil wide receiver was the starting slot back for the Blue Bombers in their 34-23 loss to the British Columbia Lions in the CFL Championship, but the loss didn’t dampen the experience for Denmark. “The atmosphere of the game was great. This is the Canadian Super Bowl.”

The Little Rock Touchdown Club has selected senior quarterback Scott Buisson as the most valuable player for the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

Along with MVPs from all other football playing institutions in Arkansas, Buisson will be honored at the club’s seventh annual awards banquet on Thursday, January 27 at 7 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Little Rock.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Behind sophomore pitcher Kayla Jackson’s two wins in the circle, including her third no-hitter of the season, the 23rd-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team beat the 12th-ranked Alabama-Huntsville Chargers twice on Monday to advance to this weekend’s NCAA South Super-Region Tournament against host Valdosta State. The Jacksonville Jaguars announced yesterday the signing of former University of Arkansas at Monticello wide receiver Clarence Denmark.

Denmark was signed as a rookie free agent and is currently participating in the Jaguar’s pre-season training camp.
