Stephen “Stevie” Richardson has been selected to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine this summer. The 10-day forum is designed to introduce students like Stevie to a variety of concepts in public health, medical ethics, research, and general practice. Students participate in site visits to medical schools and clinical facilities.
Elizabeth Wilson, an upcoming senior at Monticello High School, competed at the National Speech and Debate Tournament held in Birmingham, Alabama. The event is sponsored by the Lincoln Financial Group & the National Forensic League. Wilson is the first Monticello High School student to attend this national level competition.

The Drew County fair board is pleased to announce our 2013 Jr. Fair Board. This is our first year for this group and it is showing to be a great decision.
The purpose of the Jr. Fair Board is to increase the support of our youth, and educate them in the operations in community programs, such as the County Fair.

The Monticello Senior Citizen’s Center located at 203 Henley in McCloy Park in Monticello recently honored participants who volunteered time for special projects for the Center between May 2012 and April 2013. In recognition of “Older American’s Month”, Drew County Judge Robert Akin presented 42 certificates to the participants on Wednesday, May 29th at the Center.
Garianna Booker, a student at Monticello Middle School, has earned a position on the Arkansas National Junior High rodeo team and will be traveling to Gallup, New Mexico to compete at the ninth annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo in the barrel racing competition.
Featuring more than 1,000 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia, the NJHFR is the world’s largest junior high rodeo.In addition to competing for more than $75,000 in prizes, NJHFR contestants will also be vying for more than $100,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the National Junior High Finals Rodeo National Champion.
The Boys and Girls Club of Drew County will host a summer program for youths in Monticello and Drew County. The program started Monday, June 3rd and will run through August 9th, 2013, students in kindergarten through high school are invited to attend. To enroll, the membership cost is $20.00; and each child will pay a small fee of $20.00 per week. Breakfast, lunch, and a mid-afternoon snack will be provided each day for all students.
“WE WILL ROCK YOU” is a compilation of various age groups taking classes at Monticello Dance Academy.
Students in this group are Maddie and Mary Riley Busby, Lexi and Tristen Thomas, Avery Barnes, Peyton Sinclair, BrookLynn White, Alex Pennington, Gracie Mosley, Kate Brown, Logan Fletcher, Madi Ryburn, Madeline Griffin, Skyler Ashley, Mary Beth Wigley, Jalyn Powell, Hope Sass and Alli Beth King. This number was choreographed by Mrs. Toni Harris, instructor at Monticello Dance Academy.
The finale is “U Can’t Touch This”. The students are as follows: Blaine, Reese and Karissa Morman, Maddie and Mary Riley Busby, Gale and Grace Lee, Anna and Caroline Groves, Logan Fletcher, Kate Brown Olivia Wilson, Gracie Mosley, Kayla Arrington, Alli Beth King, Krista Sparks, Anna Collins, Abby Sass, Rivers Frazer, and Mary Beth Wigley. This number was choreographed by Mrs. Allison Neill, owner of Monticello Dance Academy.
Kiwanis is selling flags to decorate the square and courthouse again this year. Flags can be purchased in honor or memory of any service members. Flags are $30 and can be purchased from any Kiwanis member or at Union Bank from Sandra Wright or Gail Hooker.
All proceeds go to fund the Monticello Kiwanis service project, which is bedroom makeovers for children in need.
Hunter Lane, an 8th grader at Monticello Middle School competed in Nationals for the 2013 NASP (National Archery in the Schools) program, a national competition held at Louisville, KY Expo Center.
The Mother’s Day Basket raffled by Feed the Kids was won by Bonnie Hicks.

A memorial service will be held for Debbie Rausch, Friday, May 3 at 5 pm, in the Hamburg City Hall Courtroom.

The Arkansas Children’s Hospital Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports the needs and research of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital, received a $7,500 grant from the Plum Creek Foundation to support “Arts in Education,” a program to help sick or injured children cope with their hospitalization through art projects that are part of their schooling.
