Governor Hutchinson’s request for parts of Arkansas to be declared a disaster area as a result of severe weather and flooding from late December 2015 through January 2016 has been approved.

School Districts all across the state are in desperate need of school bus drivers. This is also the case for the Monticello School District.
Having enough route drivers, substitute drivers and trip drivers has become critical. We have fulltime, substitute, and trip driver positions available.

Children aged 4 – 15 (as of April 30, 2016) can register for youth baseball online at www.monticelloyouthsports.com.
One major change for this upcoming year is the ability for players in the 13-15 year old age group to register on the same website as all other players.
Louisa Smith was the guest speaker at a recent Monticello Lions Club meeting. She spoke about ‘Feed the Kids’. A program that has been in existence since 2006.
Food packs are prepared by volunteers for 150 children each week in Monticello and Drew Central Schools.

Road construction began, Thursday, replacing the drain/dip across Meadowview Drive, near its intersection with Pinecrest, in Western Pines.
The plan is to dig up the “trench” from across the street, and replace it with drains and culverts.
The road may be closed, at times, for up to three weeks, until the construction is completed.
The Drew County Sheriff’s Office along with multiple surrounding agencies have been investigating a rash of vehicle break-ins throughout the area since around January 20.
University of Arkansas at Monticello Chancellor Karla Hughes has announced the beginning of a reorganization of her senior administrative team.

For the third time in the last four seasons, the University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team is set to open its season at Minute Maid Park as a part of the 2016 Houston Winter Invitational.
The Weevils open the 2016 schedule on Friday, February 5 at 10 a.m. against Tarleton State, followed by a 2 p.m. matchup with Central Missouri on Saturday and a 6 p.m. game against St. Mary’s on Sunday. (more…)

Bridging-the-Gap, a well known search team, with experience and broad-field searches for missing people, searched Saturday for Barry Harmon, of the Coleman community, who has been missing for over a year.
One of the group’s organizers told MLive that more local volunteers are needed, Sunday morning, to help search the woods behind the Harmon home, where Barry disappeared.
4-wheelers and metal detectors are especially needed.
Saturday’s crew included 12 out of state members, assisted by around a dozen local residents, forming teams to search gps-graffed areas.
Additional volunteers her ask to meet at 8 AM, Sunday, on Hayden Loop, off of Highway 83 near Coleman.

As we approach our one year mark as an organization, it is imperative to note we would not be the organization we are today without our wonderful support from local citizens and beyond. Monticello 2nd Chance saved over 350 dogs in the year of 2015, pulling 80% of those dogs from our city shelter before they reached a time limit, and ultimately, euthanization.
Jury Convicts Woods of Kidnapping & Capital MurderThe defendant, Jonathan Woods, charged with kidnapping and capital murder, took the witness stand, at 11:20, Wednesday morning.
As Samamtha Poole’s mother took the witness stand, during the sentencing portion of the trial for her daughter’s murder, she focused more on the grief of her granddaughter, than of her own loss.
