Monticello’s Western Sizzlin was built in 1985, 35 years ago.

Jimmy and Janet Grissom, who previously owned the Crossett Western Sizzlin, bought the Monticello restaurant in 1998, and have operated it since, moving to Monticello in 2000.

MLive’s Joe Burgess visited with Mr. Jimmy, Thursday, about the restaurant’s current business situation, public attitudes with Covid, and potential re-opening in early/mid next year.

First, the Grissoms appreciate the many years of support from the Monticello community. They’ve been able to share in many birthdays, anniversaries, public meetings, and other events with families and the community.

But with the current COVID-19 pandemic affecting people’s comfort with dine-in restaurants, along with ongoing changes with public regulations, the decision to close became obvious.

“With the usual slow, cold temperature winter months, business slows most years.“

Next year‘s business climate will help the family make the decision of whether operating a restaurant can be cost effective or not.

At this point the decision to close is neither temporary or permanent, but will be decided sometime next year, based on business possibilities.
