A Western Pines man has been against supporting the traditional October 31 holiday, because of its believed pagan origin.

When he was invited to become a member of the Monticello Chapter of Gideons International, 4 years ago, God gave him the answer to “trick-or-treating.“

Saturday was the 4th year that he and his family handed out Gideon Bibles, along with a candy bar, to children and adults of all ages.

For 3 years, least 300 Bibles were distributed from his home on Meadowview Drive. Last night, the total was 400 scriptures placed in the hands of mostly children (and a few parents).

Each year, several small children exclaimed, “Mom, I got a Bible!“  However there is always the occasional, “Mom, what’s a Bible?“ which really makes his choice of treats show its importance.

Gideons International is a group  of Christian business and professional men who provide Bibles to hotels, hospitals, school students (when allowed), as well as in personal contact.
