What information do we currently have on the old Wal-Mart building???? Talk about a perfect place for new county, city and state government offices.
We currently have government buildings scattered all over town(employment office, workforce training center, police station, mayors office, MEDC, Chamber of commerce, Housing and Urban Development, Revenue Department, and undoubtedly many others I’ve overlooked). Why not give them a centralized location from which to do business??? This site already has a phenominal location, ample parking for both the public and employees AND ABOVE ALL ELSE is a location 100% suitable for this type of business. This would also revitalize an otherwise dying section of our community.
Why, exactly, Mr. McCall, are you not in office?
Walmart would be an awesome location for all those.
Shelley –Thank You! But just which office would you propose for me? The city council is full of members that are content to fly 100% under the radar - fearful of rocking the boat and loosing their positions(I certainly wouldn’t fit in this category), and I’m probably less than 1/2 the age of the last several Mayors. While I DO feel I would make a great asset to assist in any of those positions I realize I wouldn’t have a snow ball’s chance……in Monticello of being elected into an influential position here.
I do love our city and want nothing but the best for it……so who knows what the 2008 elections may bring.
Cass Martin Realty has the Old Wal-Mart Building posted. And at only $375,000 more than the current owners paid. Surely the city of Monticello can make a deal.
Hey, this building, if it needs demolishing really only consists of exterior walls. MUCH easier to tear down and less expensive than tearing down the WC Whaley property.
Now that seems affordable, Chris. I agree the old Wal-Mart building seems a good location; easy access, plenty of parking, plenty of room for fire, police and city government. Do a little landscaping to keep it from becoming an eye-sore and it seems ideal to me. Maybe the city could take out an option on the building now, then plan and work out the cost to purchase, rennovate (sp?), and add (metal building, indoor heated swimming pool, community meeting hall, etc.). Funding would probably be a lot less than $6 million and a lot easier to pass a tax ballot. But, I’m afraid we are already on a steam-roller for clearing Whaley and putting in the Community Center. Still, the idea of purchasing and rennovating the old Wal-Mart building for Police, Fire and City has a lot of merit.
Keep in mind there would be literally countless benefits to our government departments sharing a single location. To name a few:
** Shared expertise such as network administrators, marketing resources, web designers,
** A visible location, inviting to both visitors of our community and new-residents.
** Shared Internet and networking equipment (servers, routers, High-end printers,
** Better inter-departmental communication via locale and even a local intranet
** Tax payers would no longer have to travel the world over to take care of their business (renewing license, filing for employment benefits, etc…)
** With all the ample room, a portion of the building could still be leased out to local businesses to help with the overhead costs.
** Shared overhead costs, divided among departments based on the number of square feet their department is utilizing.
