Youth ChalleNGe Program now accepting applications for July class~ National Guard program offers discipline, learning and mentorship to troubled youth

CAMP JOSEPH T. ROBINSON, Ark. - The Arkansas National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program is now taking applications for class 31, which begins 15 July 2008. Youth ChalleNGe is a voluntary behavior modification program for at-risk youth, ages 16-19 (cadets cannot be older than 19 at graduation).  The program consists of a 22-week residential phase at Camp J.T. Robinson in North Little Rock, Arkansas, followed by a 12-month post-residential phase with a mentor.  Youth ChalleNGe cadets experience military-based discipline and training combined with educational instruction, experiential learning and mentoring. 

Cadets that excel academically may qualify to take the GED test.  There is no charge for the program. 

Eligibility criteria include:
* Economically and educationally disadvantaged youth
* High school dropouts
* Voluntary enrollment
* Unemployed
* Drug free
* Not on parole or probation for other than juvenile status offenses, not indicted or charged, and free of felony convictions or capital offenses
* Physically and mentally capable to participate in the program with reasonable accommodation for physical and other disabilities

The ChalleNGe model is a holistic approach focusing on eight core components that include Academic Excellence, Health and Hygiene, Job Skills, Leadership/Followership, Life Coping Skills, Physical Fitness, Responsible Citizenship, and Service to the Community.  There are currently 33 ChalleNGe programs located in 27 states.  The Arkansas National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program is one of the original pilot ChalleNGe programs, which began in 1993.
