University of Arkansas at Monticello Director of Athletics Chris Ratcliff has announced the hiring of UAM graduate Matt Whiting as assistant athletic director for external operations. Whiting began his new role at UAM on August 6.
“We are very proud to have Matt rejoin the UAM family in this new role,” said Ratcliff. “Matt is an ultimate professional and will be able to create positive and lasting relationships that will be extremely beneficial for this university and the department of athletics specifically.”
Whiting’s primary responsibilities include planning, organizing and implementing an annual fundraising program to align with the overall goals of the UAM Department of Athletics, collaborating with other departments on campus to identify and analyze new athletic donor prospects, using mass communication and social media outlets to enhance relationships with current and future donors and working with other athletic department personnel in a variety of communication and marketing efforts to further develop the UAM Athletics brand, among other duties.
Whiting comes to UAM after spending one year as a graduate assistant for the division of educational, student services and student life at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. In that role, he coordinated the chancellor’s leadership corps summer orientation, coordinated freshmen week and parent/family day activities, assisted with the reconciliation of the department budget, and represented UALR at the Arkansas College Personnel Association annual meeting and the NASPA Student Affairs annual convention.
Prior that one year stint, Whiting served the 2010-11 year as a graduate assistant in the UALR office of campus recreation and was a student assistant coach for the UALR baseball program.
While completing his undergraduate degree at UAM, Whiting gained collegiate work experience in three different departments, while also serving as the team captain for the UAM baseball squad. From 2008-10, he worked as a student coordinator in the office of special student services, office of admissions, division of student affairs, and the office of alumni affairs and advancement.
In addition to his work experience, Whiting was also a member of UAM’s Alpha Chi honor society, served as a student ambassador, and was a student representative for the UAM athletic department at the 2008 NCAA Division II national convention and each of the Gulf South Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee meetings from 2008-10.
After serving his first year at UAM as a baseball representative for the SAAC, Whiting took over as president of the committee for the 2009-10 year. While in the president’s role, he implemented community engagement activities such as Trunk or Treat, Kick for a Cause, Hoopin’ for a Cause, the Boll Weevil reading program and the SAAC silent auction.
Whiting began his collegiate career at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, where he was a member of the chancellor’s leadership council from 2006-08 and a member of the baseball team. He was team captain for the 2008 season.
His academic achievements include being named the UAM Outstanding Marketing Graduate in 2010, the recipient of the Paul and June W. Carter Business Award in 2010, a two-time member of the Gulf South Conference Academic Honor Roll and a member of the GSC All-Academic Team in 2010. He was also a member of the UAM Chancellor’s List (4.0 GPA) each semester.
Whiting is a 2010 graduate from UAM with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He completed his master’s degree in business administration from UALR this past spring. The Monticello native also holds an associate’s degree in marketing from UA-Fort Smith, obtained in May of 2008.
